Exciting discussions at the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) conference yesterday! Decarbonisation and the rise of hydrogen-powered fleets were in the spotlight. According to recent industry data, approximately 25% of fleet managers are considering or actively choosing hydrogen-powered vehicles over electric vehicles (EVs) due to factors such as longer range and quicker refueling times. But there's a catch: there is a lack of infrastructure to support the distribution of hydrogen and maintaining hydrogen fleets is more expensive compared to battery and diesel. https://hubs.ly/Q02xnPZy0

Combustion cars are replaced every 12 years, while electric cars are renewed every 3.6 years in the American market. How sustainable is the 4x faster pace of fleet change? Although the study analyzes data from the USA in particular, there is a fine line between changing fleets to improve energy efficiency and encouraging unsustainable consumption. The path to electrification is inexorable, as all the reports and scenarios from International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) , International Energy Agency (IEA), ITF - International Transport Forum and other agencies consolidate, but naturally we will not solve the entire decarbonization of transport with electrification alone. Attended my first ACT this week and was mind blown by the progress the clean transportation market has made. My biggest takeaways are: -There's more nuance to getting this job done than I realized. Ever thought about how we're going to power a forklift at a port with renewable energy? -The clean transportation market faces similar challenges that we've seen in the past with building out the 5G network or even our power grid. Except now, we have deadlines to meet and incentives in place! Similar trends are expected, history may repeat itself (i.e. consolidation). -Bringing clean, baseload power to charging sites, fleets, ports, etc is a challenge that translates from other markets. Our Diode Ventures | A Black & Veatch Company team knows this problem well and is working diligently to solve this for our clients. -Electric school buses and other fleets may be able to take advantage of energy price arbitrage. Cool! -My colleague Chris Rogge and his team are tackling these challenges head on with innovative solutions. Watching his brain churn while we walked the exhibit hall floor was like a kid in a candy store. -The Hydrogen powered monster semi-trucks are SWEET.
