In the Mountain West, rapid development growth has caused natural habitats for our birds, bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinator species to dwindle. As we know, water is a precious resource in this region and water conservation has become a focal point for landscape designs. As a result, municipalities and landscape codes have pivoted toward more innovative landscape designs as expansive bluegrass lawn areas are becoming a thing of the past. This means a turn to more xeric, native plant design—replacing large turf areas with native seed and larger beds of shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses. One design solution to help alleviate pressures and reestablish pollinator habitats is the creation of pollinator nodes or pathways. These strategically located pollinator corridors, with plant materials that attract pollinator species, provide pollinators with pathways to move pollen from one plant to another. This enables cross-fertilization, allowing the reproduction and growth of new plant species, and helps produce thriving, waterwise landscapes. This strategy can be implemented on a hyperlocal level from one backyard to another, or through common space areas in a development as shown in this graphic. It can also be applied on a much larger scale from city to city or state to state. One crucial element for successful establishment of native landscapes is long-term maintenance, and this requires champions on the ownership side who ensure that proper techniques for native landscape establishment are followed. Stewardship of native landscapes by land owners and education programs for maintenance teams are critical, as are clearly defined metrics for the long-termsuccess. This photo, taken during a warranty walk at our project site near Bend, Oregon restored to sagebrush steppe in Oregon, shows desired plants next to a handful of invasive weed species. We worked with Site Facilities Operations staff upon project turnover to help identify undesirable species and facilitate successful maintenance of established seeding. With time, native plants will out-compete weeds and maintenance will reduce with every passing year, providing the client with a beautiful landscape that saves cost and provides an important ecological function. #O2design #landscapearchitecture #datacenterdesign #ecologicalrestoration #nativeplants #nursery #biomes #sustainability #sustainabledesign #ecoregions #climatechange #biophilic

There has been a push toward "re-wilding" your property, or in this case planting a "pocket forest". While the sentiment here is commendable, it is important that you understand and consider the implications of these outdoor property management strategies. As mentioned in this article, these landscaping options will increase bio-diversity. While this will increase friendly woodland creatures like rabbits (if not invasive and damaging in your area) and birds, you are also inadvertently increasing the carrying capacity for disease vector species like mice, rats, mosquitos, ticks, and more. Given time, the opportunity to enter the structure or increase the risks for the occupants, will become a reality. There is a well established body of research that directly links ground cover and "natural" habitats near structures, with larger pest populations. In one study, regular mowing was found to be the most effective method to manage rodent populations without the use of pesticides or lethal control devices. It is critical to consider the entire impact of these types of property management decisions. When selecting under-the-shade species, consider the specific conditions of the site, such as the amount of shade, soil type, and climate, as well as the preferences for the intended use of the area.
