Exxon, Chevron Profits Surged Ahead of Megadeals. On the heels of competing megadeals, Exxon Mobil and Chevron reported a combined $15.6 billion in profits Friday, as oil and fuel prices climbed in the third quarter. Exxon’s quarterly earnings of $9.1 billion were less than half of last year’s quarterly record but rose 15% from the previous quarter. The next time you see high gas prices, remember that Exxon posted $9.1 billion in earnings for the third quarter of this year. The money is coming out of consumers’ pockets and going back to Exxon’s wealthy shareholders, to which it gave $8.1 billion in Q3.

The Hess Corporation deal would give Chevron access to the #Starbroek oil riches, transforming its long-term prospects. But arch-rival ExxonMobil has sued to block it, trying to open the door to control an even larger share of the oil riches and beef up its leadership position among Big Oil. Veteran oil investors could be forgiven for having a case of déjà vu; in the 1980s, one of the forerunners of Chevron — Texaco — went bankrupt after losing a $10 billion landmark legal fight involving the acquisition of another company1. While the current dispute is quite different, its outcome will be as consequential as the one four decades ago. #bigEnergy The dispute remained secret for four months as the parties tried to reach a face-saving deal. It became public on March 28 when Chevron filed a document known as an S-4 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, detailing the deal and Exxon’s concerns. In the third quarter, #Exxon Mobil #XOM reported a profit of $9.1 billion, a 54% decrease from the previous year's record earnings but an improvement from the previous quarter. This increase is attributed to higher oil prices and increased demand for gasoline and diesel. However, weaker results were observed in the refining and chemical segments. The earnings per share for the quarter were $2.25, slightly below market expectations. Exxon's performance has led to two all-stock deals: one with shale rival Pioneer Natural Resources and another with carbon pipeline operator Denbury. These results were boosted by higher global oil prices but offset by increased raw material costs in the chemical business. Exxon's cash reserves increased by 10% to $33 billion, providing flexibility in a volatile commodity market. The company is maintaining its production target and plans to distribute $17.5 billion in buybacks this year. As predicted Chevron and Exxon Earnings Fall Back to Earth The oil companies are still printing real big profits, but their postpandemic run of record earnings is slowing down.
