It also means people are choosing new leaders/governments or keeping the old ones. We do not know for certain what would happen. The outcomes are uncertain, yet impactful. 🌟 Moreover, during election times, many countries enforce strict rules, potentially limiting movement. That might also include limitations to partnerships with or funding for International Organisations. For communication profs like us, this is crucial. 📢 We need to stay ahead, constantly monitoring the updates, and ensuring our communication materials are timely and relevant. Flexibility is key, as events/conferences may get rescheduled or cancelled. That also means a change of plans! 🔄 This scenario is just one example of 🔍 many. So, if you aspire to have a career in international relations, whether in a technical or non-technical role, staying informed is non-negotiable! Reflecting on insights from a Career Day Workshop: Navigating Career Paths in International Relations Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop on "Manage your Career" at the EU Career Days 2023. This event highlighted one of the many advantages of the Blue Book traineeship in Brussels: access to a wide range of professional development opportunities. One memorable instance was hearing a fellow participant share her experiences within the EU institutions. She spoke candidly about the necessity and benefits of having clear goals and strategies in career planning. However, she also emphasized the often harsh reality that our first job preference is rarely successful. This leads to the need for considering second or third options, creating a sense that one's career is more often shaped by external forces than personal choice. Her story resonated deeply with me, reflecting my own journey as a young professional in international relations. Pursuing a career within international organizations, I quickly realized that securing a first-choice position is rare, and one must remain open and flexible to alternative paths. Realizing that others in this career field face similar challenges was a comforting reminder that I'm not alone in this journey. Noblahblah - Málaga stories continue… Today 16 students from the German Rhein-Maas Berufskolleg (MBO/VET- secondary education) started their ten- day course on the topic of social recruiting and content strategy in Málaga- all funded by Erasmus. All students are super motivated to develop their understanding and to work on concrete recommendations about how their employees can enhance their social recruitment activities for future apprentices (Auszubildende). An exiting and relevant topic as many companies struggle to find young talent, especially in the vocational field. Also the students will have cultural experiences, learn Spanish and will meet local experts and companies. Thanks already Héctor González Sánchez and Alex Sánchez Sastre 🤩 Today we learned how the student‘s employers, all SME companies, approach the topic of social recruitment and the usage of social media. Really diverse I can tell ☺️ Our collaboration partner is the Spanish institution Euromind, specialized in Erasmus-trainings and internships for students and teachers. What's it like working for one of Germany's premier foreign policy think tanks? 💫 As the year 2023 is coming to an end, so is my time with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik e.V. | DGAP (German Council on Foreign Relations). Here is what I took away from the past few months: 1️⃣ What surprised me the most about the #DGAP, was the extremely positive work environment. I really cannot emphasise enough how everybody I met was super caring and engaging (which may not be the most obvious and immediate expectation one has of such an established institution). 2️⃣ #Software applications in the communications department can be both, extremely useful and challenging at the same time. There are solutions for almost every problem, but this also requires adapting to multiple programs in a short time frame, and keeping track of various, parallel channels at once. All-in-one solutions such as Buffer or Canva are thus all the more helpful to manage these downsides. 3️⃣ The #communications department is an amazing #learning opportunity. You are one of the central nodes of the whole institution, meaning you get a glimpse into everything that is going on. Tasks range from internal coordination with all the different experts, to catering to a range of external audiences - and also: no, you cannot just simply copy+paste between #PR statements, #LinkedIn-, and #Twitter-posts. 👉 Right now, there are a couple of #job-openings for #students if you are interested in working for the DGAP! I put the link in the comment section and really want to encourage you to have a look (careful, the German version differs from the English one)! Typical ingredients for success in entering a career in international affairs: (These do not reflect how I think things should be. They are anecdotal and based on my personal observations.) 1. Masters degree from prominent Western policy program (such as the APSIA schools). This is less about the content of the program and more about the alumni networks and career development resources and insights that help their graduates navigate the opaque entry into careers in international policy and development. 2. Multiple internships in international organizations, NGOs, government, think tanks, etc. Typically you might start by volunteering or interning at a small, not-so-well-known organization and then build up to the more prestigious internships. 3. Passport and socioeconomic privilege. Having a passport that allows easy access to do internships in Western countries where many prestigious international organizations are headquartered. Having the economic means and/or social capital to support doing un-/underpaid internships or similar career development opportunities in very expensive cities (New York, Geneva, Washington, DC, etc.) 4. Excellent, near-native spoken and written English. Typically at least one other UN language at a high level as well. 5. Psychological resilience, social support and long-term networking. Excellent, well-qualified candidates are common in this field. Most people have a difficult path into an international relations career. You will need to be able to face a lot of rejection and keep going. You will need to believe in yourself and have support from family and friends to keep pursuing your dream despite the years of insecurity. You will need to be constantly gathering information through networking about opportunities and how to navigate the opaque entry pathways into this field.

Why the company should hire international students! Hiring international students can add diversity to your team, bringing with them unique skills, cultural awareness, and language proficiency. They are highly motivated and adaptable, having overcome the challenges of studying abroad.
