What's the difference between embroidery and crewel embroidery?
Crewel embroidery stands out because it uses wool for the stitches, unlike regular embroidery, which typically uses finer threads like cotton. This surface embroidery technique gets its name from the special wool, known as crewel, used to stitch into the fabric.
What is crewel thread?
Crewel thread refers to the 2-ply wool used in these projects. Unlike cotton floss, which often needs to be split into thinner strands for embroidery or cross-stitch designs, crewel wool is used as is. Just thread your needle and start stitching! Crewel wool provides a rich depth and textured finish, making it ideal for nature-inspired designs or beautiful wall hangings.
Crewel needles
Crewel needles are similar to regular embroidery needles but feature a larger eye to accommodate the thicker wool easily. This makes crewel embroidery a great option for younger crafters and beginners to learn the basics before progressing to more intricate designs.

1. Start with High-Quality Artwork:
The foundation of a good embroidery design is high-quality artwork. Make sure the original image you're digitizing from is clear, detailed, and of high resolution.
2. Understand Fabric and Thread:
Different fabrics and threads behave differently. Consider the type of fabric you'll be embroidering on and choose appropriate stitches and densities to ensure the design looks good on that fabric.
3. Simplify Complex Designs:
Intricate details might not translate well into embroidery, especially on a small scale. Simplify complex designs to make them more suitable for stitching.

Big news, CLO has added 3D Knit Design!
Check out the link to the full tutorial below.
What it does: Allows you to design realistic, geometry based knit and yarn structures.
What it doesn't do (yet): Output a knit bitmap or knitting instructions. It also does not appear to include yarn+knit structure physics.
I'm totally ok with the limitations, because it allows designers to start taking the first steps to 3D knit design. (Perfection is the enemy of good). CLO can now add these features over time.
Check it out!
