CENTCOM Commander Visits Israel General Michael E. Kurilla, the commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel, to meet with Israel’s military leadership, including Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, the chief of defense. Purpose of the Visit: The meetings aim to understand Israel’s defense needs, outline U.S. support efforts to prevent the escalation of the conflict, and reaffirm the Department of Defense’s strong support for Israel. Background Information: CENTCOM is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the U.S. Department of Defense. It was established in 1983 and took over the responsibilities of the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force (RDJTF). What military term makes me roll my eyes more than any other? Joint Today’s military leaders love to say that “joint” operations between services and allies are 🇺🇸’s greatest strength. But how can anyone claim the DoD works “jointly” if they exclude an entire service?? After months of searching I have not been able to find a single US Merchant Marine captain working in any of the following places: The Pentagon Joint Chiefs of Staff Commbatant Commands National Security Council War colleges Leading think tanks NATO Sure we have Strategic Sealift officers in our Navy reserves but very few fill senior staff positions. Sure we have a small handful of US Merchant Mariners working for Military Sealift Command in places like the Naval War College but replenishment is very different from sealift and supply. And I can find no evidence that we are working “jointly” with two of the five largest allied naval organizations on the planet: #1) The Philippines Merchant Marine #5)The Ukraine Merchant Marine Most troubling is the fact when I question an Army or USAF General about this they usually turn to a Navy Admiral for advice. Problem is the US Merchant Marine is NOT part of the Navy any more than the US Coast Guard is. It should not be the Navy’s job to advocate for us. It should be everyone who preaches “joint” operations to reach out to us directly. Until that happens the term “joint” rings hollow. P.S. Why did I not call out US Marine Corps Generals? Because USMC logistics officers have already started welcoming us to the planning table. P.S.2. Why should Army and US Air Force flag officers care? I’ll let General Pershing answer that question:

🇺🇸🛩 The Air Force Birthday on September 18 commemorates the establishment of The United States Air Force. Almost from the moment the Wright brothers found a way to soar with the birds, the military incorporated aeronautical pursuits into their missions. However, the Air Force did not become a separate branch of the Armed Forces until September 18, 1947. The military established the Signal Corps as the first aeronautical force in the United States. During the Civil War, the first missions provided visual communications via flags and torchlight from aerial balloons. Even so, the Signal Corps didn’t become an official branch of the Army until 1863. Its creation made way for more aeronautical training and study. Since then, military air service has gone through many names and commands. A few examples are the Air Service of the US Army, the Air Corps, and the Army Air Force. Finally, in 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act establishing the United States Air Force as a separate branch of the military. As a result of pursuing advanced technology and superior airmen, the US Air Force emerged as the swiftest tactical force ready to deploy anywhere at a moment’s notice. Our article, “Getting the Best out of Joint Warfghter Development,” was just published by the Joint Force Quarterly (JFQ), Vol. 113 (2nd Quarter, April 2024). It's always a pleasure working and writing with Charles Davis and Jeff Turner. It's an honor supporting the team at the Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS) and promoting the importance of creating and enhancing the education and skills of the Joint Warfighter. Thank you to Bill Eliason, PhD at National Defense University, for his work at JFQ and supporting our ideas and efforts! The article explores whether the Department of Defense (DoD) is producing optimal joint warfighters for U.S. military operations. Joint warfighting, crucial for conducting effective joint operations, requires leaders with a joint mindset. The development of skilled joint warfighters hinges on three key elements: balanced Service representation, experienced faculty, and a rigorous curriculum. The Joint Advanced Warfighting School (JAWS) in the Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense University exemplifies this integration, emphasizing proportional Service representation, faculty with extensive joint experience, and practical exercises to foster collaboration and interdependence. The article stresses the increasing need for joint warfighters capable of planning and executing complex, multidomain operations. Our opportunity to ensure that we maintain an enduring competitive advantage is fleeting. We must modernize the Joint Force to deter our adversaries, defend the United States, ensure future military advantage, and, if necessary, prevail in conflict. The Joint Force has taken the first step by developing and publishing the Joint Warfighting Concept (JWC) and updating Joint Publication 1, Doctrine for the Armed Forces of the United States. The JWC is a joint, combined vision for how the U.S. military will operate across all domains. The next step is to create a leadership structure that turns concepts into capabilities. FORT MOORE, GA: On May 21, 17 students representing the countries of Colombia, Mexico, and Panama walked the stage here at #WHINSEC. They completed the 5-week and were presented their respective diplomas. This course prepares security force personnel in individual tasks associated with skills and knowledge to function as advisors or planners in crisis management during military operations or initial response activities in collaboration with the interagency and multinational community.
