My Marine Corps experience has fundamentally shaped my approach to operations management, instilling in me a deep understanding of discipline, teamwork, and strategic planning. In the military, I learned the importance of efficient resource allocation, meticulous planning, and swift decision-making, all of which are crucial components of effective operations management. By celebrating the alignment between my Marine Corps experience and operations management, I not only honor my past service but also recognize the invaluable skills and mindset it has provided me with, enabling me to excel in optimizing processes, leading teams, and achieving organizational objectives with precision and effectiveness. This alignment underscores the transferable nature of the skills gained in the military to civilian roles, emphasizing the significance of recognizing and leveraging the unique perspectives and experiences that veterans bring to the field of operations management.

While I prepared to leave the Marine Corps, an interviewer asked me if, given my time in the military, where I work on the orders given to me, if I could work independently without anyone telling me what to do? Thrown off, I explained that orders only get you so far, especially when leading a team 200 miles away from any other member of authority in your organization. I got paid to think on my own. For hiring managers, it is crucial to recognize the transferable skills veterans bring to an organization. While military service operates differently and uses distinct terminology, the skills acquired correlate directly with civilian roles and responsibilities. “In the military, you obey orders - here at our company, we need independent thinking - can you work without being told what to do all the time” [paraphrasing what was said] This was the question I got during an interview while transitioning out of the Marine Corps. Suprised, I only could respond with: “Although there is a stereotype that military can’t think on their own, I can confidently say that this is not the case. The wars since 2001 have proven this as the term “Strategic Corporal” became a term. This is when young, maybe 20 year old Marines were leading teams, in combat, and their actions could have strategic impact - empowering their decisions. For me, my last position in the Marine Corps, I had 200+ Marines, responsible for everything like HR, Operations, Supply Chain, etc - and my boss was in a different state. There was no one to tell me what the do other than a 45 min phone call once a week and occasional emails with “Need to Do’s” administratively.
