🌱 A better future for people and planet demands meaningful practices of leadership and collaboration. We believe cities are big levers for change. By 2030 about 60% of the world's population will live in cities. They are the places where global concerns such as climate change, poverty, housing, mobility, integration, and safety all converge and intensify. 🏙 This is why we created the RISE Cities Fellowship for more Resilient, Intelligent, Sustainable, and Equitable cities. The RISE Cities Fellowship brings together urban changemakers to facilitate mutual learning and support the development of local solutions. 📹 Meet the leaders who drive change and learn what motivated them to join our fellowship 👇 Watch the full video and find out more about the projects of the RISE Cities Fellowship 2023/24 👉 https://lnkd.in/eYvue6PK Alisa Jashari, Anki Mölläri, Asceline Groot, Christina Neddens, Christine Ballarin, Donica Buisman, Emmi Lundán, Gerrit Jan van 't Veen, Giorgia Serafini, Gyula Dr.Kerenyi, Katrin Witthaus, Kerem Halbrecht, Minna Säpyskä-Aalto, Morten Stamm Mikkelsen, Peter Weidig, Staas Lucassen, Tamas Locher, Thea Lyng Thomsen, Thorsten Mehnert, Anamaria (Ama) Vrabie, PhD, Paul Moldovan, Stephen Lorimer, Lauren Shevills, Ulrich Dilger, Simon Höher Chloe Pahud, Louise Vogel Kielgast, Raffaela Schmuck, Elisabeth Benz, Dr. Angelika Starbatty, Marie-Luise Nau #RISE #Cities #Fellowship #GlobalChallenges #LocalSolutions #MeetTheTandems #Fellows #Resilient #Intelligent #Sustainable #Equitable

By engaging all stakeholders, cities can harness transformational change and ensure a better life for all in an urbanizing world. So says the United Nations, and we couldn’t agree more. Universities can play a significant role in this by sharing their expertise and supporting cities in developing actions. If we want a sustainable urban future for all, collaboration is key. #WorldCitiesDay

🔑One truth becomes evident: the youth hold the key to unlock a sustainable future. 🌍 The MorphoPoly workshop, a collaboration between the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, UNIDO Bridge for Cities, and the UNIDO Innovation Lab, stands as a testament to the profound impact of involving young minds in shaping our cities. This dynamic workshop has not only nurtured creativity and innovation but has also amplified the voices of the next generation of change-makers. The true power of the youth shines through as they fearlessly confront urban challenges. Through creative and gamified city-building at the MorphoPoly Workshop, the youth are driving solutions that address sustainability and a multitude of other critical issues. Especially one thing became very clear after some time playing the MorphoPoly board game: If you want to transform urban areas into sustainable and inclusive places, you have to cooperate. The exchange between cities is crucial, and we can learn from other cities' innovative approaches to tackling problems. If we build bridges between cities, we can all thrive and design a sustainable urban future. Only together can we create resilient cities. Bridge for Cities is aware of the importance of global cooperation and exchange, which is why the event brings together urban stakeholders from different cities around the world to exchange ideas, share experiences, and collectively pave the path toward a green urban future. This event serves as a reminder that our shared challenges demand a united response, and the youth, with their engagement and ideas, are at the forefront of this movement. ⭐ The final webinar is taking place in the EU Science, Research and Innovation Future of Cities series. ⭐ ▶ Inclusive cities fit for crises and long-term challenges ⏰ 20 June 2pm BST / 3pm CEST 📢 Dr Patrizia Sulis Alessia Calafiore Daniël Hogendoorn Juliana Gonçalves Trivik Verma In a time defined by high urbanisation rates and looming or existing crises, it is critical to understand how cities can turn into places of resilience and strength, rather than become centres of vulnerabilities. Cities face several challenges today, starting from the unpredictability of climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic showed how the magnitude and duration of disruptions are difficult to predict, challenging traditional risk-based management approaches to cope with crises. In this respect, resilience science has been taken up as it highlights the intricate, complex, and interdependent nature of urban systems. While a strict universal definition of resilience is lacking, it generally refers to the capacity to anticipate, withstand, adapt to and recover from shocks and stresses, such as natural disasters, economic downturns, public health crises, and social turmoil. Exciting Insights on Building Successful Consortia for Multi-Country Programmes 🌍💪 Our colleague Kathryn Scurfield recently had the privilege to represent #Ecorys and the Healthy Cities for Adolescents Phase II programme at a panel discussion for World's Cities Day on “Consortium Building and Navigating Power Relations in Multi-Country Programs", organised by the Evidence to Action Project Team at the University of Melbourne Centre for Cities, supported by Fondation Botnar. Kathryn gave an overview of the HCA-II programme and its seven active projects across Ecuador, Colombia, Ghana, Senegal, Vietnam, and India. The discussion revolved around the significance of consortiums within the HCA-II context, emphasising their role in both programme delivery and outcomes. The key takeaways were: 🔹 Start building your consortium right from the project's co-design phase. 🔹 Invest in effective communication, trust-building, and relationship development. 🔹 Understand the context in which the consortium operates to identify opportunities and foster innovation. 🔹 Cultivate a robust learning culture that encourages openness. 🔹 Leadership with the right attitude is crucial. 🔹 Building a consortium takes time, so expect delays. 🔹 Be flexible in how consortia operate to promote innovation. For more insights from the #WorldCitiesDay panel discussion, you can access the recording here: https://lnkd.in/gxHNTVF4 #ConsortiumBuilding #MultiCountryProgrammes #Collaboration #UrbanOctober

In a single image (below), we show the known universe of cities in global governance. Wherever you live, your local government is likely a member of at least one "Transnational municipal network" (TMN), or formal organizations of city governments tackling issues from climate change to poverty alleviation (think ICLEI, Mayors for Peace, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM), etc.). Black dots = TMNs White dots = cities Gray lines = city-TMN memberships The vast majority of cities have only one TMN membership and fall outside the ring of TMNs, while cities with two or more are inside the ring, and at the center, we see the powerful minority with the most memberships--and the most representation in world affairs. The geography of these top cities--from Barcelona to Buenos Aires--defies the traditional "Global North-South divide", forming their own unique landscape of politics.
