In 2023, we receive an astounding 122 nominations, showcasing the depth of talent and dedication within our organization. From these nominations, 98 outstanding individuals were recognized for their exceptional contributions. Amongst these remarkable individuals, 8 winners received the title of Roundel Award Winners for 2023. I want to express my gratitude to my previous managers and co-workers who have shown me what it truly means to be a leader, not just a boss. We've all seen the comic strips and this vs. that imagery, but to actually live and breathe it is something else entirely. When I started in my current role as an Area Manager, with a team of roughly 30 staff members, I decided early on that I wanted to be the type of leader who lived by the values of integrity, empathy, excellence, empowerment, and resilience. These values have been my guiding principles, shaping how I interact with my team and make decisions. Under this type of leadership, it’s been fantastic to watch my team grow within themselves. Witnessing tomorrow’s leaders develop before me has been a joy to be a part of. A few key aspects of my leadership journey include: - Empowerment: Providing my team with the tools and autonomy they need to succeed. - Empathy: Understanding individual circumstances and creating a supportive environment. - Excellence: Striving for the highest standards and encouraging my team to do the same. - Integrity: Maintaining honesty and transparency in all our dealings. - Resilience: Building a team that can withstand challenges and come out stronger. To my team, thank you for your hard work, dedication, and for trusting in my leadership. Just finished another leadership course. My personal top 6 takeaways are: 1. My product as a Team Leader is a high performing team. 2. Articulate vision and purpose of my team (even if it just for myself). 3. Link team strategy to the goals of the business. Everyone within the team should feel and understand their contribution. 4. Team Leader should be working “on” systems more than “in” systems. 5. Team Leader should be working more “active” than “reactive”. 6. “Leading from the balcony” approach. More work on mid-long term things from Non-Urgent but Important quadrant.

The CEO in me wants to say: Just get it done. The veteran in me wants to ask: Why are we doing it this way? For me, leadership is a balancing act between those two sides of myself. As a CEO, I want my team to take the hill. But from my time in the Navy, I know the value of providing my team with context and building an environment where we can discuss why we’re taking the hill. Because sometimes, on the other side of a hill is just a cliff. Create an environment with transparency around the decisions you make. Foster humility in yourself to listen to pushback from any member of your team. Great leadership = humility + transparency.
