Today, on June 19th, we commemorate Juneteenth National Independence Day. Join us in honoring the significance of this day in American history, reflecting on the struggles and triumphs of African Americans in the pursuit of equality and justice, and recognizing their invaluable contributions both past and present. In observance of Juneteenth, our Black Excellence Employee Resource Group (ERG) organized a thought-provoking event at our Columbus, Ohio office. We were privileged to hear from Broderick McKinney, Vice President, Central Region at BMW of North America, and Black Excellence ERG Executive Sponsor, as he shared inspiring words urging us all to take continued action towards advancing a more inclusive and equitable society. Thank you to the members of our BMW Group Black Excellence ERG! #Juneteenth #BlackExcellence #BMW

As we bring our #BlackHistoryMonth reflections to a close, we welcome LaVera Lansdown, Vice President of Client Experience and Women at ABM Impact Group member in sharing her perspectives on living authentically and the importance of the ongoing conversations on race in America. ❔ What message do you have for young Black people who are navigating the challenges of today's world? First and foremost, be your authentic self and stand on your principles. It's important for everyone, regardless of color, to be themselves. For young Black people, recognize and celebrate your ethnicity to propel you forward and upward; be careful not to allow it to be an impediment or an excuse. ❔ Who are some of the most inspiring Black leaders that you admire? Martin Luther King, Maya Angelou, Harriet Tubman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ava DuVernay, Nikole Hannah-Jones, and most important for me, my Mother, Patricia N. Harvey, who led by example, and for me, ensured that I knew who I was, that I valued my self-worth, and understood that while I was no better than anybody else, more importantly, no one was better than me. ❔ How can we address and respond to microaggressions and other forms of unconscious bias within the workplace? Communication and education are key. We all must recognize that the USA is a mixing bowl of ethnicities and cultures. ❔ Have you read a book on Black history that challenged your understanding of race relations in America? If so, which ones and why? Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete by William Rhoden. It chronicles the evolution of blacks going from the cotton fields to the playing field, making money yet still being enslaved. The read can be viewed as controversial, but it makes one think about the invisible shackles as referenced throughout the book.

I’m counting down to pouring out my heart and soul on Tuesday 10th October 2023, speaking on a subject so close to my heart - “Real Talk: The Unspoken Black Experience” in the workplace and in society, as part of Rail Unites for Inclusion and Turner & Townsend Black History Month campaign. Black History Month is a time for everyone to celebrate the achievements of Black People in History, and also to raise awareness of the contributions of successful Black people in Great Britain. #RepresentationMatters! If anyone out there is still wondering why a whole month is dedicated to celebrating Black History, I would like to encourage you to view this as celebrating a birthday milestone. When we celebrate a birthday milestone, it does not mean that we do not treat ourselves all year round, however we tend to use a particular date to celebrate, commiserate or reminisce about the special milestones in our lives. If you know anything about me, you might already predict that I will be keeping it #real as we explore the #UnspokenBlackExperience in the workplace and in society. I firmly believe that Inclusive leadership, collaboration and education are the future currency for shifting the dial for the much needed cultural change which will attract, retain and nurture diversity of thoughts in the industry. I can’t wait to see you at the event (physical and online), alongside other inspirational panellists - Odis Palmer, Tina Owusu, Sonia L Hazel, Tonderai Matizha-Johnson. Find out more about the event here – https://lnkd.in/e5PXtnQR #RealTalk #InclusiveFuture #Blackhistorymonth #RailUnitesforInclusion #makingthedifference #changingthenarrativeinleadership
