THANK YOU to our partners at 204 North Kitchen & Cocktails for hosting our meet-and-greet last weekend with Blumey Awards Alum and Charlotte Latin School graduate Arella Flur who shared about her journey from winning Best Actress at the 2019 Blumey Awards to becoming the Assistant Company Manager for the 25th Anniversary North American Tour of MAMMA MIA! Arella shared her wisdom and experiences with current and recently graduated Blumey Awards students, encouraging those who are just beginning their own journeys to “be entrepreneurial,” “develop your own brand,” and “always focus on relationship building” as keys to success. The students were able to enjoy the completely sold-out, final performance of Mamma Mia here in Charlotte after a delicious meal and inspiring conversation. Your support makes opportunities like this and so much more possible for our local students. Support more high impact arts education programs today! Hopefully this tradition will continue for Owen graduates as they begin their next chapter. Building great teams requires empathy for your teammates. Getting to know and understand each other builds trust. Trust allows for team members to admit vulnerabilities and great teams are formed when we step in to protect our teammates. I worry that much of this has been lost in a work-from-home environment that could lead to viewing teammates as a means to an end where trust is never fully established.

Back in 2020, many of the more senior briefs we worked on specifically requested people of colour. Our advice then was that this would just be moving the few senior black/brown folk available between agencies. Your agency would be that little bit more diverse but it was a zero-sum game for the industry as a whole. More sustainable change would come from making Adland more open to a wider pool of talent and it is admirable that various schemes were developed to help improve diversity at the bottom of the pyramid. Four years is clearly too soon to see these cohorts in decision-making roles. However, It's disappointing that so many feel that any success seems not to have yet translated to significant opportunities for POCs to even make it to these more senior positions.

After taking a break from social media over the summer, I'm back with the weekly Nice Guy and Gal Awards. I'd love your support to get these back up and running. Every Friday, I’ll share nominations for people who have been identified as nice guys (and gals). If you want to nominate someone, just shoot me a private message by 5:00 EDT on Thursday. There are only 3 requirements: 1) you have to be connected to the person you nominate 2) you can only nominate one person per week 3) you can’t nominate yourself 😀 If you want to provide a brief reason for your selection, that’s great, but it’s not a requirement. Let’s recognize people who make a difference simply by being nice. Have a great day, everyone. And now that we're on the other side of summer, have a great fall, too! https://lnkd.in/gYpYJvu #network #sportsbiz #people #niceguy #networking #sportsmarketing

As Black women, we have experienced the trauma of our intellect, leadership, and person being constantly challenged and erased. Let's call it what it is: Misogynoir. Misogynoir, as coined by Dr. Moya Bailey, is defined as the ways anti-Black and misogynistic representation shape broader ideas about Black women, particularly in visual culture and digital spaces. 👉🏾 The negative impact of misogynoir across all sectors, not just digital media, has continued to be detrimental to the livelihood of Black women. 👉🏾 In public and medical health, this concept is crucial as it underscores the need to address not only the physical health disparities that Black women face but also the mental and emotional toll of misogynoir. 📔 Learn more in Dr. Bailey’s book: Misogynoir Transformed: Black Women’s Digital Resistance. https://lnkd.in/gj3WepTX #CiteBlackWomenSunday #publichealth #academia #TSL

Graduate Candidate at Norfolk State University | Marketing and Communications Intern at CMWP | B.A. Communication from University of New Haven
Hi LinkedIn Community! I'm thrilled to extend an invitation to the inaugural Equity in The Media Fellowship, hosted by the Department of Communications, Film, and Media Students. This two-day event promises hands-on breakout sessions, film screenings, engaging professional panels, and the unique opportunity to observe two live tapings of "In Conversation" segments. These offerings provide a dynamic and practical experience, allowing students to glean valuable insights directly from industry professionals. In the Media and Entertainment industry, the underrepresentation of Black professionals in executive decision-making roles is a pressing issue with far-reaching implications. This fellowship aims to spotlight the array of careers available in Film and TV while championing diversity within the industry. Recognizing the significance of Black History Month in this context is paramount, as it acknowledges the often overlooked contributions of Black Americans in media and beyond. ALL University of New Haven students, regardless of major, are cordially invited to connect with a diverse array of media industry professionals. From Production, Distribution, Sales, Finance, Entertainment Law, and Sport, attendees will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from executives shaping the landscape of media and entertainment. I look forward to witnessing the impact of the Equity in The Media Fellowship and the positive transformations it catalyzes within aspiring media professionals. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. Please share this with your networks as well. See you at the event! #experientiallearning #careerdevelopment #careereducation #careeradvancement #diversity #equity #entertainment #filmdistribution #filmproduction #entertainmentlaw #sportsentertainment #podcast #education #blackhistorymonth #blackexcellence

Happy Juneteenth! On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday, marking a significant step in acknowledging the historical and cultural importance of this day. This decision came a year after the largest social protests in U.S. history, reflecting a nationwide call for justice and equality. Recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday underscores the importance of acknowledging and owning our public memory. It is a day to celebrate freedom and a moment to reflect on how the United States continues to evolve towards its ideals of democracy, freedom, and justice. Although the U.S. is a work in progress, it is through the relentless efforts of countless individuals that the nation strives to fulfill its promise: to be a place where all people can realize their unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. To achieve this, we must ensure that the American narrative includes the collective journey of African Americans, particularly those descended from enslaved ancestors. One person dedicated to preserving the public record of Black lives in America, from Barack Obama to Colin Powell, is Julieanna Richardson. As the founder of The HistoryMakers, she oversees the largest collection of African American testimonies since the Works Progress Administration. I had the honor of interviewing her during the 64th annual Fulbright Association Conference, where she delivered a moving and poignant case for the necessity of documenting the Black narrative in America. Listen to our discussion about the impact of an incomplete public record of the Black experience in America. Happy Juneteenth! Let's continue to celebrate, reflect, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
