Their efforts demonstrate a sense of community and care so #firstgenerationcollegestudents can persist and thrive through college. ⚜️Although first-generation college students’ parents may not have earned a college degree themselves, they still rely on their parents for support—financial or encouragement. ⚜️ FGCS have a network or social capital already. Growing their social capital to include college faculty, staff, career mentors, or industry professionals increases the likelihood of them earning a college degree. ⚜️ FGCS have an interdependent culture where their success is their community’s, sibling’s, or parent’s success. Honoring FGCS’ superpower of collaboration and connection makes them stronger while pushing to finish their degree. Share how your education institution supports FGCS to and through college. How are you using their assets to propel them toward success?

Today, on Black History Day 19, we celebrate the achievements of the first African American President of the United States, Barack Obama. As the 44th President, he served two-terms from 2009 to 2017. President Obama's policy achievements included health care reform, economic stimulus, banking reform, and a repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. In 2009, he was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. President Obama faced many challenges during his tenure, including the 2008 financial crisis, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the continuing global war on terrorism. Despite these challenges, he proposed unprecedented federal spending to revive the economy and renew America’s stature in the world. Black History is American AND World History. Let us remember and honor the achievements of President Obama on this President’s Day.

Black History Month should also be an opportunity to celebrate everyday folks. Don't get me wrong, we need to acknowledge Black excellence, exceptionalism, and those who have made profound historical contributions to this country, but we also need to acknowledge that not everyone needs to make history to be worth celebrating. So, here's to: ➡️ Black parents who work tirelessly to ensure a better life for their babies ➡️ Black educators who have given so much to their students ➡️ Black religious leaders who bring hope to their communities ➡️ Black artists and performers who shine, but never receive the spotlight ➡️ Black entrepreneurs who bring forth new concepts, ideas, and knowledge ➡️ Black military personnel who put their lives on the line to defend America ➡️ Black Americans who show up to work and give it their all each and every day ➡️ . . . “How do you expect me to remember instructions that we discussed a month ago?…” These were the words shared by an employee. Rather than being deterred, I was inspired to create more streams of communication and to share resources in different formats. We have all spent time creating protocols, developing systems and have shared standard operating procedures. What we don’t do a good enough job of is sharing these resources in different ways for our people to feel connected. Communication, Communication, Communication and some more communication. We can all agree that communication is a key component to success in business, strategies, relationships and so much more. Get informed, be inspired and stay connected. Chicago Defender has been a constant fabric in the American black experience. More than a local paper, The Defender has been an engine of ideas and opinions that galvanized black people nationwide. Founded in 1905,The Chicago Defender celebrated its 115th Anniversary in 2020 and the evolution being recognized nationally as the 2nd most widely read and best African-American Newspaper by Nielson and Essence Survey 2014. This month, which acknowledges and uplifts the contributions Black Americans have made and the impact Black Americans have had on the development of our nation, is an important one. However, this Black History Month - like many - is far too short a celebration of Black history in the United States.
