One of the easiest ways to display a conscious effort to prioritize employee well-being is to lead well-being initiatives & participate for yourself, others will most often follow. Offering health benefits and education, as well as an all encompassing well-being program also puts the health of your employees at the forefront. Aside from these factors, you can actually make it even more simple: provide them with opportunities. What does that look like? It likely looks different for many organizations. It may mean presenting them with the opportunity to move more, such as implementing walking meetings, wellness walks, establishing a designated walking path, etc. It could mean presenting them with healthier food options, replacing vending machines, etc. It could be providing employees with a flexible break time to be able to participate in various initiatives. It might mean conducting an employee well-being survey to let them share their thoughts and involve them in the design of your organization’s well-being program. It’s as simple as that. What is your definition of a healthy workplace? The World Health Organization has defined it:⤵️ “A healthy workplace is one in which workers and managers collaborate to use a continual improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and well-being of all workers and the sustainability of the workplace by considering the following, based on identified needs.” When I saw this definition, the key phrase that stood out for me was: ➡️“workers and managers collaborate to use a continual improvement process….”⬅️ Unfortunately, this is not the norm. Not everyone who is in management wants to be there. That truth trickles down to how they lead and supervise their team.
