🌟 Embracing Vulnerability and Building a Killer Team 🌟 Last fall, the stars aligned, and I found myself at an eye-opening D2C event in Toronto, all thanks to Blair Forrest's gracious invitation. Speakers like Jake Karls, Mike Fata, Margaret Coons, and Karen Danudjaja dropped wisdom bombs that resonated deeply with me—especially on the topic of vulnerability. Oh, and did I mention we also clinched the 60-second pitch? Hoka! Reflecting on my journey, it's a wild ride from the tough streets I grew up on, kicked out by my dad at the age of 13. Back then, my daily grind involved navigating through the drug world, gangs, and constant struggle with substance abuse. Vulnerability was deemed a weakness, a trait that could be exploited—a stark reality in the school of hard knocks. Fast forward to today, and I find myself at the helm of a dynamic team, a crew that not only complements my skills but fills in the gaps where I fall short. While degrees may hold their value, my street smarts taught me that a killer team is absolutely indispensable. Being vulnerable was a survival strategy on the streets, but in the business world, it's transformed into my superpower. It's taking time to shed the armour I built to protect myself, but in doing so, I've unearthed the ability to connect authentically with others. Life experiences have sculpted me, offering a unique perspective that fuels my determination. I've come to understand that vulnerability doesn't equate to weakness; it's a wellspring of strength, a potent tool for forging genuine connections and fostering collaboration. So here's a toast to the journey—from the streets to the boardroom, from vulnerability to strength. Never underestimate the power of authenticity, and always remember: you don't necessarily need degrees; what you truly need is a killer team. The special Essence Led Leader I would like to celebrate this week is Reg Raghavan. Reg is the CEO of Cultural Pulse, a multicultural business he founded over a decade ago. He has this calming presence and wonderful smile which radiates love and acceptance. You can just "be" with Reg - you don't need to fill in the spaces with chatter. This is such a beautiful and rare gift. 2. Reg has a brilliant mind. While he has this deeply connected presence, his mind is always exploring and exploding with tech / data / opportunity. He sees things that others don't. He creates things that never existed. He sees things emerging in the future before it's even a trend. Secretly my money is on Reg to become a tech famous millionaire one day! 3. His profound curiosity. Reg is fascinated and curious about the physical and spiritual - and these worlds coexist effortlessly within him. His life experiences are fascinating and over lunch it's not unusual to shift from data/AI to psychology to the universe and then spiritual shared dreaming.  You will never be bored having lunch with Reg - in fact you are guaranteed to come away with things you never knew! Reg is not only brilliant, generous, humble and kind, he makes everyone's world a little bigger in the way he connects diverse people and worlds with such ease and warmth. I feel very lucky to know Reg professionally and personally as a friend. ONLY THE PARANOID SURVIVE!!! I've been thinking a lot about the difference between being content and being complacent, and I happened to stumble across this quote. At first, I thought this was a fake sign, some sort of parody poster sold in a gift shop next to Spencer's Gifts...but it's a real quote from Andy Grove, co-founder and former CEO of Intel. He was also known as "the guy who drove the growth phase of silicon valley". Before seeing this quote and learning more about Andy Grove, I have been thinking that we are at the peak of American Hustle Culture, but perhaps we're not. Grove was appointed chairman in 1979, and he led a long run of growth and success in silicon valley through the 80s. I can only imagine how much they were hustling then. I was born that next year. So my new hypothesis is this: Maybe we're not at peak hustle, maybe instead we're in the height of hustle awareness. (Coining the term officially) Perhaps we are more acutely aware of the daily grind and the speed at which life goes by, and are now a generation aiming to find the balance of being content without being complacent? That resonates with me, personally. Though I fancy myself a hard-working futurist, with every day that passes, and every inch my kids grow, I realize how quickly it's all going and that half the game is just being present. And content. Without being complacent, or paranoid for goodness sake. 😉 But that's just me... How do you find that balance of feeling content without being complacent?
