Medical professionals should actively build relationships with all their colleagues, from anesthesiologists to nurses, techs, and other specialty physicians. It's essential to respect every member of the healthcare team, recognizing that each part contributes to the whole. The primary focus should always be on the patient, not on competition. Even new professionals, fresh out of studies and passionate about their knowledge, should value the practical wisdom of experienced colleagues, such as nurses who have been working for decades. By considering diverse sources of knowledge and fostering these relationships, success will follow, and colleagues will enjoy working together. Just whole healthcare executive scaling health equity through field-defining business, policy and service integration strategy
We need systems that imbue selflessness and humility, not select against them. We all know people like Spencer portrays whose kindness burned out, feeling taken advantage of by health systems run by people no longer like them. I believe most of those healthcare leaders started out selfless, (even if not that humble) and over time lost something. So the real question is, how do we keep healthcare professionals selfless and humble? (Forgive me, all ye who've magically maintained it.) Is heralding them, their values, or their achievements enough? What stops us from incentivizing selflessness and humility in healthcare? Like many virtues, they can be cultivated. Extolling those who naturally show virtue may help with modeling, sure. But we should also consider how to do so in ways that reflect others might strive for selflessness and humility and thereby benefit financially. #healthcare #valuesmatter and should for #valuebasedcare.
In my 2+ decades in medicine, I’ve consistently noticed that the “best” physicians, nurses, administrators, and staff are typically also the most humble and selfless. An oncology nurse navigator who personalizes care packages for her patients completing chemotherapy. A young gastroenterologist who never lets you know he’s actually the sharpest clinician in the conference room. A primary care physician who blends top-notch clinical skills with a consistently upbeat, deeply caring demeanor. A scheduler who spends extra time graciously answering each patient's questions, including questions they didn’t know they had. A nurse who spends her potential downtime walking around the procedure unit looking for ways to help her co-workers and patients. A medical resident who races to every inpatient emergency, even when she's not on the code team. Remarkably, these individuals shy away from adulation and public recognition. They blush when they're called on stage for awards. They explain to their impressed supervisors that they're simply doing their jobs. They even seem a bit uncomfortable accepting thanks for all they do. They manifest the traditions of selflessness and loving-kindness found in all major religions, for example by St. Francis, Guanyin, Rambam, and Rantideva. It's truly inspiring to read Prof. Spencer Dorn's reflections on the joys of teamwork in medicine. His experiences at UNC highlight an often underappreciated aspect of healthcare – the profound impact of collaboration across all levels of the medical team. I love the post! In echoing his sentiments, I want to emphasize the extraordinary value of every team member in a medical setting. From the diligent cleaning staff who ensure operating theatres are pristine and germ-free, to the nursing assistants who provide invaluable care and sometimes spot critical risk issues during their routine duties in my area of specialisation psychiatry. These roles, though sometimes less visible, are pivotal in maintaining a safe and efficient healthcare environment. Teamwork in medicine is not just about enhancing operational efficiency; it's about creating a supportive community. The synergy between different roles – be it surgeons, nurses, technicians, or administrative staff – fosters an environment where everyone's contributions are recognized and valued. This mutual respect and understanding are crucial in a high-pressure field like healthcare. Moreover, the social interactions and bonds that form within these teams provide a powerful antidote to burnout. In a profession that often demands a great deal emotionally and physically, having a supportive team can make a world of difference. It's about sharing the highs and the lows, celebrating personal milestones, and offering a shoulder during tough times. Throughout my career in medicine, I've witnessed firsthand how teamwork can transform patient care and enhance job satisfaction. Great teamwork is a very underappreciated source of joy in medicine. And one antidote to burnout. I spent yesterday performing GI procedures with an anesthesiologist, procedure nurse, and technician. Being together the whole day gave us plenty of time to pick up on each other’s practice styles and to also chat about life outside work. And everyone chose at least one Spotify playlist. Working on the same team over time yields compounding benefits. For nearly 15 years, I’ve done procedures at one facility with a remarkably stable team. Several gastroenterologists and nurses started before I did (they remember me as a fellow). Most other nurses, techs, GI docs, and anesthesiologists have been there for at least a few years. For one, familiarity breeds trust. Everyone knows each other’s strengths and limitations. And everyone aligns as part of a team fully committed to doing a great job. We stand ready to go out of our way to help when we can. And we are comforted to know others will do the same for us. Also, over time, we come to really know each other. We become friends, even a work family. We are excited to hear someone’s good news (like a daughter’s wedding or a new puppy) and hurt to hear someone else’s suffering (like a sick family member or recent divorce). Clinical medicine can sometimes feel like a grind. Yet, practicing on a great team can make it so enjoyable. In an age when many healthcare workers feel worn out and dissatisfied, we must nurture and protect teamwork. #healthcareheroes #teamwork #healthcareonlinkedin
