Mobile extension services have the potential to play a significant role in sustainable agricultural development. They can help farmers to improve their productivity, reduce their environmental impact, and increase their incomes. Still, lots of questions abound:   What are the challenges and opportunities of providing mobile extension services in developing countries? How can mobile technology be used to improve agricultural extension services? How can mobile technology be used to improve business development services? How can mobile technology be used to improve educational extension services? What are the ethical considerations of using mobile technology for extension services? What are the policy recommendations for the advancement of mobile extension services in developing countries? 🌽 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 🌽 I'm excited to share a recent experiment I conducted to test the germination rates of maize seeds from three different companies. I used the tissue paper method for both replications, with a key difference: - Replication 1 (R1): Seeds were soaked in water for 24 hours before placing them on tissue paper. - Replication 2 (R2): Seeds were directly placed on tissue paper without soaking. For each company, I used 50 seeds in each replication. The results showed that soaking seeds for 24 hours (R1) achieved a germination rate of more than 90%. [LEARNING from PROFESSIONALS] 💦 The 𝗠𝗦𝗰 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 students made a splash in ocean conservation with our guest speakers, Marina Cacace and Matthieu Louet, who presented Blue Komune, a revolutionary platform 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀. In the private agriculture sector, graduates, post-graduates, and PhD holders are often labeled as "freshers" after completing their studies, regardless of whether they have been independently running their own companies as young, innovative entrepreneurs for years. If this designation is based solely on not working under anyone or any recognized organization, then what purpose do the academic programs like the 4th-year RAWEP (Rural Agricultural Work Experience Programme) and the 4-month internship serve? During these periods, we encounter numerous incidents such as working with farmers and gaining industrial exposure. What is NELD? Let me try and elucidate! I had the privilege to intern in the JRD Tata Ecotechnology Centre of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation for six weeks. It was during my internship that I got a chance to research about Non-Economic Loss and Damage of climate change. In a lucid way, NELD are those losses and damages which cannot be quantified.Briefly, it ranges from the impact caused on the mental health of an individual to the traditional and cultural practices of a hamlet or biodiversity loss of an entire village. Despite existing in the social fabric for a long time identifying various aspects of NELD has been ordeal as the 'value' for intangible loss and damages are subjective. . #research #NELD #noneconomiclossanddamage #climatechange

🤝 Campus resident: Uticon, an engineering consultancy specializing in factory and pilot plant design for the food industry, has expanded to Wageningen Campus in 2022. Uticon assists companies in designing sustainable and carbon-neutral factories and pilot plants, ensuring compliance with food safety requirements and optimizing processes for ingredient and consumer product production. "Say a company or start-up/scale-up wants to build a factory or pilot plant for the production of an ingredient or consumer product. They already know where they are going to build, but how are the raw materials getting in and distributed to the processes? What processes will be used and what equipment do they need? What kind of investments are needed for the building? How do they ensure that they meet all the food safety requirements? We have all the disciplines to design the entire factory/pilot plant for them, so that it is sustainable and carbon neutral,” says Harold Post, team leader of Uticon in Wageningen. Opening an office on Wageningen Campus was a strategic decision, given its reputation as a hub in the Foodvalley in the Netherlands and beyond. The dynamic environment and proximity to Wageningen University & Research expand their network and collaboration opportunities. Uticon is eager to engage with the campus ecosystem, attending events like F&A Next and exploring partnerships with companies in Plus Ultra II. They are for example taking part in the protein- and upcycling communities from Foodvalley NL, it’s a great way to meet innovative companies and start/scale -ups in these fields. There are also contacts with StartLife who are great in supporting start-ups. Lastly, there are plans to collaborate in a PPP (Public Private Partnerships) project on sustainable proteins that is yet to be launched. 🎓Uticon also looks forward to collaborating with Wageningen students through internships and projects, offering opportunities for mutual learning and growth. I got it all wrong. Have you ever felt like you got everything wrong? I recently graduated in #FoodTechnology and #Biotechnology from the University of Perugia, and I finally realized that the traditional career paths of a food technologist do not align with my interests. What led me to this realization? Throughout my academic career, I have actively participated in several #Erasmus projects, including a term at the University of Seville in Spain and two terms at Ghent University in Belgium, where I completed an internship and thesis. Additionally, my active involvement with the IAAS (International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences) over the past four years has provided me with valuable experience in organizing international events and activities. All these experiences made me realize that I want to make #projectmanagement and #international #collaborations as central part of my future career. However, I really feel like I got everything wrong when I read job offers that require degrees in project management or business administration for these roles. What now? I got it all wrong, I said, or maybe it is just a new beginning.

But also the internships of Valentine MONCHIET, Marion Brunet, Adriano Marzec and finally AnHongKimTuyen. 📣 Second, on the role of scientists in alerting and accelerating action at local and global levels... to protect the biosphere and people. To talk about these issues, a great team of speakers: LeToanTHUY, LamDaoNGUYEN, PhamTiMaiTHY, @BenedicteFruneau and TranAnhTu. ⬇ 🏙 🌾 Thirdly, it's an opportunity to talk about practical applications, such as how to follow the subsidence of HoChiMinhCity or the Mekong Delta, the salinisation of rice fields, how to estimate biomass with different techniques... ⁉ And finally, to face difficult questions such as "is the planting of fast-growing species a solution or a problem", or "how to build a strong radar community able to use the future Lotus data"?
