Today I was given the opportunity to share a patient success story during townhall/grand rounds. I presented to executive leadership at Montefiore’s Moses and Children’s Hospital campus. Some major takeaways from my presentation was for healthcare providers to:  1. Acknowledge your patients strengths so they are able to build encouragement to advocate for themselves. 2. Think outside the box and dig a little deeper. There’s other things that could be going on that aren’t at the surface level that needs to be resolved.  3. Practice active listening. To advocate for your patients you need to listen to understand not listen to respond.

After decades of successfully managing a renowned group practice alongside a partner, overseeing six locations, three doctors, and a dedicated team of approximately 45 staff members, Dr. Ernest McDowell initiated plans for the next step of the practice’s evolution. Through his engagement with Diwakar Sinha, Perrin DesPortes and the team at Polaris, we helped increase the group practice’s EBITDA by 40% and shortened the timeline toward the sell-side milestone from over two years to just 18 months. As a result, we were able to transact the sale to DSO Specialty Smile Partners at nearly double the initially expected value. Dr. McDowell is now happy to continue with patient care, but with a growing company much bigger than he alone. In healthcare leadership, passing the baton is just as important as a surgeon's steady hand. I've learned that patients' lives depend on smooth transitions. Think of it like a relay race – when we pass on tasks or care, it needs to be done perfectly. Imagine a patient moving from one part of the hospital to another, like changing runners in a relay race. We need to do this carefully, so the patient's medical history, treatment plan, and feelings are well cared for. Just like relay runners trust their teammates, healthcare teams count on leaders to make sure every patient gets great care at every step. At its core, patient-centered care prioritizes the needs, preferences, and values of each individual patient. I feel fortunate to serve as a local Board Member for the South Texas ACHE chapter. I’ve always thought that the “great consolidation” amongst health systems will lead to large regional Kaiser-esque models, where the payors, clinicians, and facilities are integrated. What’s really interesting about Jaewon Ryu’s statement below is he says Geisinger is the “first inaugural member.” That makes me think Risant Health isn’t done, it wasn’t just a singular acquisition, but will be the first of many other “member” organizations that will lead to a huge conglomerate across the nation. What do you think? Am I reading into this too much? Or will Risant rival HCA + UHC in its ability to gain market share through vertical integration of clinical and health plan assets?
