My name is Masodi Success, a passionate aspiring developer eagerly stepping into the realm of technology through the HNG Internship program. This article dives into a significant backend challenge I recently tackled, offering a step-by-step breakdown of how I navigated through it, and why I'm embarking on this exciting internship journey with HNG. In the midst of my development endeavors, I encountered a complex backend problem that demanded both creativity and precision. The task at hand involved optimizing database queries in a large-scale e-commerce application. As the user base grew, so did the database load, leading to performance bottlenecks that affected user experience and operational efficiency. Solution Analysis of the problem: The initial step was to conduct a thorough analysis of the existing database schema and query performance metrics. By leveraging monitoring tools and query profiling techniques, I identified specific queries that were causing slowdowns. Research: Armed with insights from the analysis phase, I delved into researching best practices for database optimization, particularly focusing on indexing strategies and query rewriting techniques. 🌟 My On-Campus Journey: From Trials to Triumphs 🌟 I have started my preparation from Jan 2023 and path to success is often paved with challenges, setbacks, and moments of self-discovery. Here's a glimpse into my on-Campus adventurous experience: 🚀 Round 1: company : Latentview Analytics ❌Rejected The journey began with a thrilling opportunity at Latentview Analytics. After acing the online test, I was over the moon! However, despite pouring my heart into the group discussion round, I faced rejection. It was a tough pill to swallow, but I knew it was just the beginning of my quest. 🔍 Round 1: company : Texas Instruments ❌Rejected Undeterred by the setback, I plunged into another opportunity at Texas Instruments. Once again, I triumphed in the online test. However, despite giving my best shot in the final interview, luck wasn't on my side, and I faced another rejection. Yet, I refused to let disappointment overshadow my determination. ✨ The Turning Point: Zapcom ✅ Selected Just when I thought my journey might be reaching a dead-end, Zapcom emerged as a beacon of hope. Clearing the online test was exhilarating, but it was the interview round where I truly felt like I belonged. However, it turned out to be a daunting task! Five things, in hindsight, I should have done more of when I was starting my career as a software engineer... 1) Taken more time to explore other disciplines. These first few years are perhaps the best time to experiment and build up a view of the software landscape and find what technology suits you. 2) Written more Writing has the benefit of driving deeper understanding of subjects, as well as potentially building an audience. It's never too early! 3) Networked more Due to fear of socialising, I didn't start networking until several years into my career. Building a network online has meant that I have reaped the benefit of creating connections in the industry as well as having made some great friends. 4) Less courses, more building Courses are a decent starting point, but the real hands-on work is where true knowledge is built. 5) Read wider There is so much knowledge to be gained from books that aren't necessarily about software engineering.
