This week I invited my teammates and senior YMCA of Three Rivers leaders to a screening of the #UnCharitableMovie (thanks #UnitedWayWDG for the showing). I only wish I still had my "I'm Overhead" shirt! For the people who haven't had the UnCharitable kool-aid yet, this is a powerful explanation of the way we penalize nonprofits while expecting them to solve the world's ills. There are clear and compelling examples of discrimination in (1) compensation, (2) marketing, (3) capital investments, (4) risk-taking and (5) time to impact. If you read this, and found yourself bristling or objecting.... I urge you to find a screening and watch the film. If you can't get to the film, try the TED Talk - it's 10 years old now but every bit is relevant (even more so in some cases). Imagine a world where charities can unleash their creativity for the benefit of humankind without arbitrary restraints. It's within our reach. Let's do it! #nonprofit #DanPalotta #fundraising #tedtalk https://lnkd.in/gAjZkPDs

At some point in our lives, Elder Care will be an issue. For many families, they are not familiar with navigating the legal and financial sysems to access the best care for an elderly parent. Quite often, it happens too late. Let's understand why that is the case. Please consider donating to my documentary project on Elder Care: https://lnkd.in/evTTnKXM

⭐ The Uncharitable Movie looks amazing Jim Hayhurst! The stark double standard between how nonprofits vs for-profits are viewed is a topic that drives me mad. 😡 🔎 It's okay for for-profit's to fail but it's not okay for a #charity to ever fail. We celebrate #entrepreneurs who miss the mark yet when it's a nonprofit, we persecute their #leadership. 🔎 This is what drives #charities to paint a rosy picture of all their work - they must sweep failures under the rug or they will lose their funding. Nonprofits cannot open up about what has worked and what hasn't because any failure means lost funding. 🔎 Of course, there are some bad actors in the nonprofit space, but no more and I'm quite certain much less than in the for-profit space. We must enable everyone and every entity to learn from #failure so they can do even better work. This double-standard drives charities to mediocrity rather than to the brilliance they are capable of. This must change if we are to successfully combat the worlds most challenging problems. 🌍
Here's where you can watch "UnCharitable" in select theatres in the US (Sep 22) and Canada (Oct 22). Even better, your company, organization and collection of impact orgs can do a theatrical buyout. "Dinner and a movie" with your donors, board, fellow impact leaders, and community. Spread the word, buy tickets for friends, get the movement going. #uncharitablemovie #philanthropy #charities #nonprofits Uncharitable Movie

I had two of the best work meetings this week with similar messages, the oversaturation of bad news and big challenges that need to be fought make us desensitized and apathetic about the role we choose to play in those fights. We rarely have the energy or capacity to commit to big dreams and bold action anymore. Clara Campbell leads our advocacy team and she lives by this quote by Anatole France. "To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe." It's hard to keep fighting the good fight when you get told no, loose funding, don't have the budget, or someone doesn't believe in your plan. Worse yet, maybe you don't believe in your plan. The Media Cause team got a big morale boost and a lesson in big dreams and bold action from the following videos and I think you will too. These projects ignite emotion; sadness, anger, and joy. Take a peek and share which one was your favorite. I get shivers every time I watch "The Greatest". 🕊 Toxic Influence: A Dove Film | Dove Self-Esteem Project (https://lnkd.in/g96ep5xq) 🌊 The Copenhagen Bench (https://lnkd.in/gqXVwkXz) 🌟 The Greatest (https://lnkd.in/g8fMqGN9) 🏝 Morning After Island (https://lnkd.in/gxb4sFEm) 🤳 Knock Knock (https://lnkd.in/geYUA_bc) 🖐🏾 See My Skin (https://lnkd.in/gzP7QhZg) 💬 Missing Matoaka (https://lnkd.in/gbdAmtvP) #nonprofit #nonprofitmarketing

The film is a short documentary about Roy and PJ Hirabayashi, founders of San Jose Taiko and pioneers of North American taiko, a form of drumming with roots in Japanese culture that is influenced by other notable genres. Taiko is more than a musical form for the Hirabayashis – it is about way of life and a medium of expression that allows you to find your voice. Following the film screening, Pear, Doug, PJ and Roy, will have a conversation about the film, PJ & Roy's 50 years of taiko, and what’s next for them. Hello everyone! What are you doing right now? Can I take a guess? Working to make money? How about doing what the gov wants you to do? So. What about everything else? EVERYTHING else? There is a huge universe out there. And we are discovering more that we don't know every day. Now, what is your Plan A? Work hard all your life and strictly obey every government rule? And then drop dead? Glad to have had you here with us! That plan has made such a difference! NOT! Many lifetimes ago artist Gere Anderson and I had a great talk about this subject. My recollection: Ms. Gere invested an awful lot of her time in painting and teaching painting. Why? It did not make much money for her. It did not make her the darling of any government. Her point was that there is value in things that are neither money makers nor politically desirable. According to Gere, one of those things with value is art. And according to Gere, it is not enough to view art (like listening to music). You must play the music. You must create art. It is all in you. Unique. No one can command you to create it. It is YOUR creation. If you do not try, you will never know. So. Thinking about any changes in your future? Not enough time? While you are thinking, what about making a donation to Gere's charities? And these were all charities Gere supported while she was alive. Or you can donate to the Geraldine Anderson Trust? Now, finally, how close do you think you are to not needing an employer and not needing governments? See "Happy People: A Year in the Taiga" https://lnkd.in/eNhWTeiJ You may be much closer than you think! #art #independence #money #work #career #laws #obedience #dissent #freedom #life #charity #cost #benefit #time #loveforall

Sobering facts around the impact of CoL in #Sussex. Do give this a watch if you have a moment. Thanks to those involved for supporting those most in need. #foodpoverty #fuelpoverty #work #costoflivingcrisis
In Sussex, like in many places, the Cost of Living crisis is not just a headline — it's a harsh reality for individuals and the charities that support them. 📈 As we navigate these difficult times, the insights from local communities and organisations are more crucial than ever. Hear what some of the groups we support told us about their current situation: https://ow.ly/F1aN50QxRul The stories are a stark reminder that when times are tough, the impact on the most vulnerable is often disproportionate.
