Scaffolding is a temporary support structure to provide safety -- both a literal and psychological concept. I first heard the term when I listened to Adam Grant tell the story of Grandmaster Maurice Ashley, first black grandmaster in chess who coached an underdog middle school chess team from Harlem to smashing success. Before Maurice could teach them to win at chess, he had to get them to PLAY chess, to even CONSIDER such an idea for themselves. Scaffolding. I think about that a lot as a woman in #tech, as a #mom to 3 daughters, and as the President of Diverse Daisies, a #nonprofit designed to give girls a safe space to develop confidence and skills. I think about it every time you all ask me about women and #impostersyndrome. Maybe we don't have imposter syndrome at all; maybe we're just navigating a world not designed for us. Actually discriminating and unwelcoming to us. It's one thing to invite us in, it's another to feel safe and welcomed. Commanding a room vs. demanding a room. 🎉 TEDxQUT is back for 2024! 📣 We had a stall at QUT’s Orientation Week where us past speakers and MC’s spruiked all things about the program. 🖊️ Also, who doesn’t love freebies!? We had HEAPS of merch to giveaway. It’s inevitable that we had some passerbys who JUST wanted the merch and didn’t care about TEDxQUT. Yes, the pens are that good. ⤴️ But, the TEDx team taught me how to turn this type of interaction into an opportunity. ❓It was as simple as asking the question: “have you heard much about TEDxQUT?” and letting the conversation roll from there. 📱 In most cases, this led to engagement with the program, whether it was a social media connection, a sign up to the news letter, or even an application to be a speaker. ✅ This rings true to the saying “every no leads to a yes”. A really interesting and helpful talk from Lisa, reminding leaders to consider how a team works together when they are making difficult decisions and giving useful tips on how to make improvements. "Candour is key... and candour becomes contagious" is such a true and helpful point: candour is vital in a team in order to generate better, more inclusive discussions; leading to better team dynamics and will always deliver better decision making.
