Bhavish Aggarwal’s Post

After Azure exit last month, we’ve now fully exited google maps. We used to spend ₹100 cr a year but we’ve made that 0 this month by moving completely to our in house Ola maps! Check your Ola app and update if needed 😉 Also, Ola maps API available on Krutrim cloud! Many more features coming soon - street view, NERFs, indoor images, 3D maps, drone maps etc!

Hi Bhavish, a big congratulations to you and your tech team! Now since you are saving 100 Cr a year, I request you to stop charging heavy commissions from the Poor Drivers, so that they stop CANCELLING THEIR RIDES, they stop DEMANDING FOR OFFLINE RIDES, they stop ASKING FOR CASH PAYMENTS.... It's time for you to focus on the wellbeing of your real partners - Your Brand Ambassadors - The Poor Drivers!!!! #TimeForTheChange #MakeInIndia #BrandAmbassadors #InfyPlus

Come on! I have 2 things to say, 1. If it's your map. How can it be 0 expense. There must be some amount to manage and maintain it. 2. You have just built a wrapper on OpenStreetMap and changed the color and providing it. A normal software developer can do it easily in few days. It's good that you mentioned the credits to them in the app. When we click on the OlaMap icon. But it's too bad that you are not mentioning it here in the post. Open source does not always accept credits or anything in return. But it's our good will/goodness to share it back. Please have that mentioned in the post. Respect OpenStreetMap what is powering your maps behind the scenes.

To have an apples to apples comparison, could you also share how much it cost you to build your own Maps and how much is the run cost? Else merely saying that you used to pay 100 cr pa earlier and now 0 is blatantly misleading

All these comments generating so much -ve views for Ola - Ola this Ola that - Ola ne mera ghar cheen lia, driver ne extra paise leliye, cabs are all broken and blah blah blah What happens when you get stuck using your usual Google Maps, us waqt everyone is like maybe kuch Internet glitch hai At least the person is trying to break the dependency from a foreign application - Even if its open source/piggybacked from an existing solution. Instead of making fun or complaining we can look forward to it, wait, explore it - The demography in India has its own set of challenges and solutions to it.. Its high time we stop complaining and start exploring new ways 😄

At least he is trying to break the dependence even if this requires going to open source. How long Indian, producing so many engineers does not have things of its own. Why do we need to get confirmation of western world to approve quality or acceptance of ideas. We are unique and so are our problems. If you cannot invent or even dare to do it stop trolling someone who is trying. It requires a great mite to come up with these thoughts. Even Google bought the maps solution from another startup. They didn't invent it.

I recently decided to “save” about €10,000 a year by stopping my meal and grocery delivery services. Sounds great, right? Well, here’s how it went, Now, I spend my valuable time grocery shopping and meal planning—time I could’ve better spent with my family or on work. (Resource Allocation) I end up buying groceries I don’t always use before they expire, and often grab things I didn’t intend to buy just because they’re on sale. Classic scope creep! (Scope Management) The associated costs for kitchen essentials like oil, spices, trash bags, water, gas, and the overall wear and tear on my pots and pans have skyrocketed. (Operational Costs) To top it off, I might need to upgrade my kitchen soon (hello, tech debt) and even hire a cook (additional resource expenses) and manage them (overhead). (Technical Debt and Resource Management) And after all this effort, everyone still complains about my cooking. Poor user experience, anyone? (User Experience - UX) Sure, I might get better at cooking and managing the kitchen over time, and hopefully, my family will be as loyal as OLA customers and stick around to find out. (Customer Loyalty)

I'm sure it would have costed a lot to develop, even if you piggyback on an existing open source map solution. I'm dead sure it would cost a bomb to maintain/improve in terms of people costs even if the infra is on Krutrim. And, OLA must be paying Krutrim for infra, I assume. Therefore, unless someone at OLA can explain this case study in detail, I find it hard to believe that its 100 Cr vs 0 per year comparison in terms of the end to end business case.

Can you focus your attention to the actual service Ola provides.. ? Cab hailing. In case you forgot. its gotten so bad people don't even try your app. So these maps and AI clouds are of no use.

While there are millions of advantage of having inhouse software. I failed to understand how do you tell this is 0 expense. That means Ola spend 0 in development of the inhouse map? Or Bhavish Aggarwal you just valued 0 of your own teams product?

There is always a cost associated! Can't be ZERO!
