Meditation is the practice of consistently getting better at catching your brain in the act of thinking thoughts you did not ask it to think
That's a great way to look at it, it's another way to describe concentration power, the ability to choose to pay attention to something that's relevant in the moment. After consistent practise you can very well choose the thoughts you get, so if you get a thought you did not consciously think of, you learn cessation (common term used in Buddhist literature describing meditation) - how to stop a conscious or unconscious process. Ofcourse, in all practicality, there are some thoughts which will always exist that we didn't consciously create.
The challenge lies in segregating the thoughts you asked your brain to think from the ones you didn't.
As per my understanding meditation is a process where you are consciously creating a distance between body and mind.
Bhavin, your insight on meditation beautifully captures its essence and transformative power. It’s inspiring to see a successful founder prioritize mental health and mindfulness.
Well put. Many worry that they are not getting "better" at meditation because random thoughts keep coming up. Avoiding the random thoughts is not the point, just catching them is.
But then I love this. Oftentimes the most difficult problems are being solved by the brain in a very dynamic and random approach. At that time, linear thinking was invalid.
To define meditation as an act of getting better at something is a trap. It's simply recognizing the truth of what already is. You can't control the thoughts.
It’s all about repetition it a habit. Through it, you will catch yourself faster when you get triggere by situations.
