2022 NYS Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee | Baseball Historian | Bringing the love of baseball to the American youth | Environmentalist - NYBG | Fmr. Adjunct Professor - Fordham University
During the early 1840s, two groups of fraternities began to organize. The first group was the “sporting fraternity” for those who enjoyed sports, including light competition, with social gatherings following the contests. The “baseball fraternity,” however, was organized strictly for playing baseball. Associations and clubs were then formed with rules, appointed officials, and scheduled matches. Until this point, the game was played for healthful recreation and the merriment that followed. However, once the games became organized, the fans who wanted to spur interest started to wager on the outcome and, at times, predetermined the outcome by “fixing” or “hippodroming,” which eventually escalated into corruption. Oddly enough, gambling gave the game an added dimension, as it attracted a different crowd (gamblers) to this fledgling sport. Thus, a symbiotic relationship formed between the two entities of baseball and the gambling world, which provided additional revenue. #Baseball #History #AmericanHistory #NationalPastime #TheNewYorkGame #Education #NYSBaseballHOF #1800s #EarlyBaseball #SportsBetting

A great player knows how to capitalize on their opponent's mistakes and finish the game quickly, without giving their opponent any chance to recover. What do you think of this quote? Student at University of Silesia and vocational school: public administration and mathematics for finance and economics
8 Lessons from Levon Aronian Levon Aronian, born on October 6, 1982, in Yerevan, Armenia, is one of the world’s foremost chess grandmasters. He began his chess journey at the age of nine, rapidly achieving the title of master. Aronian earned his grandmaster title in 2000, at just 18 years old, demonstrating his exceptional talent and dedication to mastering the game of chess. 8 Advanced Lessons from Levon Aronian 1. Understanding Pawn Structures Aronian has often emphasized the importance of pawn structures in planning strategies. For example, in his game against Vladimir Kramnik at the Candidates Tournament in 2018, he exploited weaknesses in his opponent's pawn structure to dominate the center of the board and win the game. 2. Time Management In his match against Magnus Carlsen at the tournament in Basel in 2012, Aronian demonstrated how crucial time management is. By maintaining pressure, he forced his opponent to make errors in the endgame, leading to a victory. 3. Exploiting Weak Squares In his game against Anand at Wijk aan Zee in 2013, Aronian leveraged the weak d5 square by placing his knight there, which allowed him to take the initiative and ultimately win the game. 4. Maneuvering in Closed Positions Aronian is a master of playing in closed positions. His game against Hikaru Nakamura in London 2011 showcases how he strategically maneuvered his pieces to gradually improve his position and win the game. 5. Ability to Transform an Advantage At the FIDE Grand Prix in Dubai 2014, Aronian turned a slight material advantage into a crushing victory, showing how important it is to capitalize on every minor mistake made by the opponent. 6. Defense in Difficult Situations Even in tough positions, Levon can defend effectively. In his game against Peter Svidler at the World Cup 2011, despite apparent advantages by his opponent, he defended successfully and managed to turn the game around. 7. Exploiting Time Advantage In his match against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave during the Chess Olympiad 2016, Aronian used his time advantage to force mistakes under time pressure, leading to his victory. 8. Flank Attacks His exceptional attacking skills were on display in his game against Wesley So in Saint Louis 2017, where his attack on the opponent's kingside proved decisive. A Unique Anecdote about Levon Aronian During a tournament, Levon Aronian surprised everyone when he suddenly started singing at the chessboard during a critical moment in his game. This not only stunned the audience and his opponent but also showed how singing helps him focus and alleviate tension. This unusual method of coping with tournament pressure has become one of the favorite topics of discussion in the chess community and a testament to how Aronian's personality influences his approach to the game.

Just look at that confidence by me, fighting for the win in a drawn position against the tournament favorite! Using my horse more precisely than John R. Velazquez (top jockey according to Google). - Recognizing I had time for the Knight fork to steal enemy bishop, while still retreating to control enemy’s e1 promotion square. - Noticing we would have same colored bishops, instead of opposite which leads to drawn end games! But my bishop could be much better because I could use it to control my b8 promotion square while solidifying my pawns on the kingside so enemy had no counter threats. Enemy pawns awaited my King to bring them their final ruling on light squares so even if enemy would have stopped my b pawn push? ➡️ Would have to use his king to block mine from entering his pawn party. Worst I could do was draw even with poor play! What a great situation to be in! He still had a draw, but it wasn’t super easy to see at our level. “Dayton, is your LinkedIn just a chance for you to brag about slightly above average chess performances?” - Think of my LinkedIn and much of my social media as my chess scrapbook. It might not be that impressive now, but no one knew Mike Trout would go on to be one of our generation’s best hitters. I bet many wish they would’ve appreciated his talent when Trout started playing baseball more now that he’s mastered it. Similar to a young Mike Trout, you’ll see glimpses of greatness in my highlight reels that simply need to be fine tuned and combined with end game technique. It’s no worse than decorating our walls with Six Sigma certifications like some at corporate do, pretending that makes em any more valuable than simply practicing talking alone with my stop watch. At least I actually did something in the below. Which was show up with a good attitude and play competent intermediate chess! #LateBloomingChessProdigy

I did not wake up a billionaire on Tuesday and I doubt I will tomorrow, but here's hoping. Winning the Powerball lottery is notoriously difficult, with odds that are extremely low. Here are some events or scenarios that have better odds than winning the Powerball: 1. **Getting Struck by Lightning**: The odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are about 1 in 700,000, while the odds of winning the Powerball can be as low as 1 in 292 million. 2. **Being Attacked by a Shark**: The odds of being attacked by a shark are roughly 1 in 11.5 million. 3. **Hitting a Hole-in-One in Golf**: For amateur golfers, the odds are about 1 in 12,500. 4. **Being Dealt a Royal Flush in Poker**: The odds of being dealt a royal flush in a game of poker are 1 in 649,740. 5. **Becoming the President of the United States**: The odds are estimated to be about 1 in 10 million, considering the number of people who could potentially run for the position. It's important to note that while these odds might seem more favorable in comparison to the Powerball, many of them still represent rare or unlikely events. The point is to illustrate just how difficult it is to win the Powerball jackpot. What would you buy with the Jackpot?

In his latest book, "Hidden Potential", Adam Grant describes how the Raging Rooks, the underdog team from a middle school in Harlem, won the national championships under chess (and life) coach Grandmaster Maurice Ashley. The team's approach to debriefing games - won or lost - was part of their competitive advantage. Are you bringing this philosophy to work? A good question to ask at the end of debriefs is: How are we smarter now? #buildingbetterteams #adaptability

Player development is crucial for the National Soccer League (NSL). Despite soccer's growth in the U.S., elite opportunities for young talent remain scarce. While MLS has boosted visibility, the odds of an American player reaching it are about 1 in a million. The NSL aims to change this by providing a more accessible pathway from grassroots to professional play, identifying and nurturing overlooked talent. Involving top-level coaches and scouts, the NSL will offer trials to assess technical skills, physical attributes, and mental toughness. Successful participants will transition from amateurs to professionals. To build its profile, the NSL will feature these trials in a documentary series, showcasing the personal journeys of potential stars. By expanding opportunities, the NSL aims to strengthen American soccer culture, build a stronger national team, and become a cornerstone of the sport in the U.S https://lnkd.in/eH_7xx5m
