Mentorship has become something of a buzzword these days, but it really should be thought of as more than a corporate trend. The entire concept of mentorship can be traced to the story of the Odyssey, when the goddess Athena - in disguise of a village elder - provided necessary guidance to a wayward young person who was at a crossroads. There's something to that story that stands timeless - the thought of mentorship going beyond a single encounter to truly help someone, while simultaneously learning something about yourself. In truth, the more honest we are with ourselves, the better we can connect with and guide our mentees. This National Mentoring Month, I encourage you to go beyond the surface. Seek to build meaningful, long-lasting mentor-mentee relationships. Offer your wisdom, but be prepared to invest in a commitment that goes beyond resolutions and short-term goals. Whether you're guiding one or a few, remember, the impact you make on their professional journey is profound. Let's embrace the real, raw, and rewarding journey of mentorship. #TrueMentorship #Leadership #NationalMentoringMonth #BeAMentor #MentoringImpact #MentorshipGoals

Learning points: investment on own growth and development ( which i agree) have lunch or breakfast with people - get idea on what teamates are feelings - its enegerizing and fun - get an idea of whats relevant and real time data just in time questioning - step back and help understand the subejct matter - less about answers and mroe about deeper thinking - in changing world, its about giving confidence to arrive at answers themselves building trust - take time to know the other person - help them understand strengths and weakness - be human common mistakes - create a mini you - thinking yhou have to have all answers - having to be right all the time humans are processed to understand stories better feedback tips as a mentor to mentee: - trust - have to be ready - make it actionable Just finished the course “Sanyin Siang on Strategic Mentoring” by Sanyin Siang! Mentoring isn’t just a one-way street―it’s a dynamic exchange that can transform both mentor and mentee.💡 In our most recent blog, Elena French talks about unleashing the power of shared growth through mentorship. When approached with a commitment to open communication, defined goals, and the expectation of mutual respect and learning, we, as leaders, can help create a mentoring experience that transcends workplace programs and becomes a fulfilling adventure of shared insights and personal growth. Navigating the mentorship journey can be a tightrope walk between enriching others and managing our own resources. It's intriguing to see how simple shifts in approach, like grouping mentees or embracing technology, can enhance the mentoring experience. This balance not only amplifies our impact as mentors but also protects our own well-being. https://lnkd.in/dBaCWxui #Mentorship #Leadership

Navigating a "reverse mentor" relationship with someone more senior in the organization can be tricky but very rewarding. This article shares great advice and actions on how to overcome the common stumbling blocks: - A lack of confidence: When you find yourself feeling intimidated or in doubt, take a deep breath and remind yourself that this person has asked for your help, so you do have knowledge worth sharing. - A lack of vulnerability from your mentee: You have to create a psychologically safe relationship. As with any mentoring relationship, this starts by building a foundation of trust. - An overeager attitude: Resist the urge to give a bunch of advice straight away. Instead, asking questions up front allows you to see the landscape of the mentee’s thinking on the subject and offer your perspective where it fits best. - A defensive attitude (on your end): Due to your generational differences, your mentee may have attitudes or assumptions that trigger you or make you uncomfortable. Instead of getting defensive, adopt a two-step response: curiosity followed by perspective sharing. Start with something like, “Can you tell me more about what you’ve observed that’s led you to that conclusion?”. Once the mentee had a chance to respond, you could say: “I can understand how you got there. Would it be okay if I shared my own experience and observations? They might be different than yours, but they might help complete the picture.” Heck, this is good advice for navigating all sorts of relationships. LOL
It's called reverse mentoring, and it can help bridge generational gaps.

IAMU Mentorship Tips of the Week Mentor-mentee relationships are more than just connections; they're pathways to growth and success. In these dynamic partnerships, learning to become better is paramount. Mentors guide, share wisdom, and offer support, while mentees bring enthusiasm, fresh perspectives, and a hunger to learn. But it's not a one-way street. Both parties must actively seek improvement, honing their communication, empathy, and leadership skills. By embracing continuous improvement, we not only enhance our own abilities but also enrich the mentor-mentee journey, creating a nurturing environment where growth knows no bounds. January is National Mentoring Month. If you don't know the meaning or benefits of mentoring and don't have a mentor already, you're missing out!! Whether you're a student, new or senior professional, sportsperson or just about anyone in the youth or adult world - get on board right away either to share your experience and expertise or to develop through a dynamic and experiential, trusted and positive partnership. Here are 5 ways to celebrate: 1. Start or join a #mentoringprogram at work, school or in the community. 2. Understand what is mentoring, the process and guidelines, benefits and skills... and share your learning! 3. Find yourself a mentor or offer to be one yourself. 4. Thank your mentor or mentee for their time, effort, feedback and commitment. 5. Share a mentoring story or experience. I did the first at Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) this week - we launched the Mentoring program for High Potential leaders! Thank you to all the mentors for their commitment to #leadershipdevelopment at #Metro #ThankYourMentor #mentoring #yourmetro #mentoringamplifies #mentoringmonth
