1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read at the expected standard. 25%. Just let that sink in. Being able to read confidently is life changing. Education is the gateway to everything, not just higher education and employment but responding to job advert, understanding an employment contract or credit agreement, reading the small print on medication, just understanding basic travel timetables. So many things many of us take for granted but things that put insurmountable barriers in the way for others. 1 in 7 adults today are functionally illiterate. Adults with poor literacy skills aren't just more likely to be unemployed or in low-paid jobs, there is also a causal link between low levels of literacy and shorter life expectancy, depression and obesity, with some regions having a life expectancy 26years less than literate counterparts. £50 donated this week with The Big Give will double to £100 and will provide 2 children with an entire years support of one-to-one reading through Schoolreaders volunteers. Simple. But life changing. Dig deep if you can. #literacymatters #thebiggive #donate
One in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard. Without reading skills, a child is denied the gateway to learning. They cannot access their secondary education fully and their job and life opportunities will be diminished. That's why Schoolreaders is here to help children learn to read. With 1,000 schools, 2,000 volunteers & 20,000 children reading every single week, we're changing the story of children's literacy. £50 will provide one child with an entire year of one to one reading support in school, and this week that amount can be doubled via The Big Give If you are planning to donate to Schoolreaders this Christmas, please do so between now and December 5th, and your gift will make twice the impact. Did you know? School can still be expensive, even when it's free! While many countries offer free basic education, hidden costs like uniforms, books, and exam fees can create a significant barrier for families. These costs can reach up to 40% of a household's income, forcing children to drop out or delay their education to work and support their families. Here's where Smart Foundation can help! We support children in need by providing essential resources like uniforms and textbooks, alleviating the financial burden on families and keeping kids in school. Did you know that 1 in 5 children don’t have a book at home?* In fact, 1 in 7 primary schools have no library space at all - that's more than 750,000 children. And where there is a library space, our friends at the charity Read for Good have found that this is often woefully inadequate, with books that are unappealing and outdated. Children facing poverty, who need these school libraries the most, are most likely to be missing out. We're giving schools across the UK and Ireland the chance to win £1,000/€1,000 in National Book Tokens and a year’s free membership to the School Library Association; PLUS one overall winner will also receive £500/€500 to help them create a fun and welcoming library space for all. *1 in 5 children in England between the ages of 5 and 8. The voices of parents matter when it comes to education, and we need to listen closely to what they're saying. A recent study carried out by Public First and commissioned by a coalition of education charities School-Home Support, Khulisa and Impetus - Backing the best, revealed a profound breakdown in parental attitudes towards full-time school attendance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Read the full report to gain a deeper understanding of this issue and join the conversation about how we can bridge the gap between home and school to ensure children are in school, ready to learn. Whatever it takes. 👇 https://lnkd.in/ex62yvRn #EducationMatters #ParentalPerspectives #educationforall #schoolhomesupport #attendance

I’m committed to SCHOOL CHOICE FOR PARENTS. Every parent understands the importance of education for their children, but our schools are too often failing to prepare our children to truly advance in life. Ideas such as school choice will allow all parents – not just the wealthy – to take control of their children’s education. School vouchers have been proven to work. They have provided better outcomes not just in charter and private schools but in public schools as well. More importantly, the ability to choose the options that are best for each child should be available to all, with success being measured in hard work and merit rather than accident of birth. When elected as your Congressman for California’s 46th District, I will work to establish school choice as a key pathway to a better future for all our children.
