Cultural Economist helping leaders build a common ground of understanding and collaboration on race and economic equity
MLK wrote a book about the "Negro Revolution" that rose up in 1963. The book, "Why We Can't Wait" has an opening chapter titled, "The Negro Revolution: Why 1963?" MLK spends 8 chapters answering that question. This book was published in 1964, the same year MLK gave a speech to 4,000 White Americans in San Diego about "remaining awake during a Revolution." In 1965, the Dept of Labor published a research report titled, The Negro Family: The Case for National Action." The first chapter is titled, "The Negro American Revolution." In it, the federal government compares the "Negro American Revolution" with several monumental movements throughout US history, including the "American Revolution itself," and concluded "there has been none more important" than the Negro Revolution. Yet, no schools teach about the Negro Revolution, which arose in 1963, led by MLK, and produced nonviolent direct-action protests in nearly 1,000 cities. When we commemorate the 1963 March on Washington this year, and when we commemorate MLK Day next year, let's educate America about the Negro Revolution and its three specific demands: End segregation in schools End discrimination in housing End discrimination in banking
In 13 days…the 60th anniversary of the #MarchOnWashington for Jobs and Freedom and of my father’s #IHaveADream speech. Here is a video of #TheFreedomSingers singing “We Shall Not Be Moved” at the #March. During the Civil Rights Movement, #music with intentional, moving messaging helped to lift the spirit; strengthen mental, physical and spiritual discipline; and remind people of their “soul power” and of God being in justice’s corner. Let’s explore history to #DreamAgainMarchForward. #MLK

A snippet from my short film, "Shakespeare: Loitering in Italy," which I presented at a Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship conference in September 2022, in Ahsland, Oregon. Truth matters. Today more than ever. We need to re-examine truths we have taken for granted and have accepted as truth -- sometimes for centuries. In that light, the Shakespeare Authorship Mystery is worth exploring -- it touches on not only the very core of the language we speak, but also on the origins of the rich literary foundation on which Western culture is based. Part of the problem is that we use a 21st-century mindset and can't understand how people lived four hundred years ago! In Elizabethan England, it was an act of treason to leave England without the express permission granted by either the Queen or the Crown. There is no evidence that the tradesman, William of Stratford, the purported author, ever left England. And how could a tradesman (with no recorded education) have afforded to venture out from what was then a densely illiterate market-town to embark on a European tour? Records do show that Queen Elizabeth's favorite Poet-Courtier, Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, did take such a tour, and it included the cities which were settings for those Shakespeare plays -- 12 of 37 plays in all -- outside of England. Oxford was heir to the oldest, wealthiest, most illustrious earldom in England. Since age 21, he had been providing skits and plays for the Queen's entertainment at her various palaces. Note: There was no public theater in England at the time but in Italy the Italian Renaissance was blossoming and with it, the creative excitement of the birth of modern drama. In this snippet from my short film, "Shakespeare: Loitering in italy," as the Queen, I read from the letters of introduction she wrote on behalf of her wolfish earl, Oxford. In them, she requests that "all individual kings of Europe and the Emperor Maximillian," should each welcome him as her "beloved cousin," and treat him with the same respect they would treat her. She promises that if they do so, she will reward them handsomely. Known as a budding literary genius and patron of scholars, in Italy, Oxford was invited to performances of Commedia dell 'Arte in noble and royal palaces. Where, btw, he fit right in. Note that, while 24-year-old Oxford was soaking up the local customs and color in each of these Shakespearen settings (over 15 months), the young lad, Stratford's Will Shakspere (sic) --who lived a hard, four day ride by oxcart from London -- was only 10 years old.
