If you have an emotional reaction to something, it's a sign that something interesting has happened and you should write about it. So, I did. When I read the Financial Times' article on the "Uncancelling" of John Galliano, it stirred something within me. The narrative around cancel culture and redemption prompted me to write my first ever letter to the editor. In my letter, I explored several key points that resonate beyond Galliano's personal story: The Dichotomy of Redemption: While Galliano's actions were indefensible, his journey towards redemption highlights a narrative on the potential for personal growth and societal forgiveness. It's a reminder that people can evolve and societies can extend forgiveness. Societal Accountability: The situation opens up a broader conversation about societal mechanisms of accountability and growth. It's an invitation to reflect on how we, as a community, deal with mistakes and the path to making amends. The Fashion Industry's Influence: What is particularly interesting to me is the fashion industry's role in these dynamics. The immense pressures and the industry's rapid growth can be factors in personal crises. This perspective highlights the importance of understanding both individual and systemic conditions that contribute to public controversies. Galliano's narrative serves as a catalyst for a broader reflection on the complexities of human nature, the possibility for change, and the transformative power of empathy. As Carola long says in the article "I’m inclined to share the view of Washington Post senior critic-at-large Robin Givhan that “if you believe that he should be able to move on, and believe in giving him another chance, you also still can feel deeply for what he said. It’s possible to hold these two conflicting thoughts in your mind . . . ” I end my letter by saying "Galliano’s story invites us to pause and reflect on the complexities of human nature, the potential for change and the power of empathy. It’s a compelling case for a culture that seeks to understand, rehabilitate and, where possible, forgive". #FashionBusiness #FashionIndustry #FashionDesigner #JohnGalliano #FinancialTimes

Get ready, y'all. Black cowboys are about to be everywhere this year. We're already seeing signs: Pharrell's Louis Vuitton show was centered on the Black cowboy (and modeled by real Black cowboys). Dapper Dan's collaboration with Gap centered on Western style. And then we're about to get Beyonce's country album and I can't wait to see her take on Western style. This has been my favorite story to write so far this year. I loved speaking with experts about why this aesthetic is hitting the mainstream now. Here are some highlights: 🐎 Cowboys are a uniquely American invention. Black cowboys made up a quarter of all cowboys in the American West in the years after the civil war. For young formerly enslaved men, it provided work that was slightly less oppressive than other options. 🐎 But in popular culture--in dime novels then movies--that came in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Black cowboys were erased, and that influences how many of us think of cowboys today. 🐎 There's been a concerted effort by scholars and decedents of Black cowboys to correct the narrative. Now, pop culture is catching up. Fashion is now helping tell these stories. And I'm here for it!

"Fashion, to me, is a powerful tool of empowerment. Whether it is used to express your individuality or empower and sustain the cultural legacy of our artisans, it’s so much more than just clothes. It’s a statement of your beliefs and a vehicle to create a positive impact." - Anita Dongre An excerpt from a candid afternoon chat between Your Story and our Chairperson, Anita Dongre.
