I recently had the privilege of moderating a panel during the Age of Learning Leadership Forum, where I was joined by some of the most accomplished educators in the industry. Dr. Daniel Domenech, an immigrant to the US, led his first district at the young age of 32. He later ascended to the role of superintendent for Fairfax County Public Schools and culminated his remarkable career as CEO of AASA, The School Superintendents Association. Alongside him on the panel were Kandace Bethea and Diana Greene. Both are part of the exceptional 1.4% of Black women who have become superintendents. Dr. Bethea currently serves the Marion County School District, SC, while Dr. Greene, after leading Duval County Public Schools, transitioned to her current role as CEO of the Children's Literacy Initiative. The combined wealth of their experiences led to several enlightening takeaways: Early Childhood Education: The consensus is clear – investing early yields the highest returns, especially for the children who need it most. Tech & Human Connection: While technology is a powerful tool in education, its real potential shines when complemented by genuine human interaction. It's more than just integrating tech; it's about ensuring it's accessible, intuitive, and timely for all educators. Professional Development: The essence of education lies in empowering our educators. With consistent and targeted professional development, we can guide them through the ever-evolving landscape of education. Courage & Leadership: Today's educational reality calls for unparalleled courage in leadership. It's about steadfastly prioritizing students, even when decisions are challenging or go against the grain. Nine years ago, the San Mateo office of the Golden Gate Regional Center (GGRC), which provides services and financial support to people with developmental disabilities in the San Francisco Bay Area, welcomed two Stanford University students who arrived in a Winnebago. The two students then drove eight GGRC San Mateo office workers to the neighborhoods where potential recipients lived to assess each family’s needs right then and there, completely bypassing the three-month-long, bewildering bureaucratic process for the services. They completed nine assessments in less than two hours. The trip was the result of a design-thinking exercise with the Stanford students. During a brainstorming session, a GGRC staffer said they should all go in a Winnebago to bring GGRC services to where clients live. Although the Winnebago experience wasn’t scalable, GGRC learned the value of design-thinking in that exercise. GGRC now brainstorms improvement ideas and figures out ways to prototype them by putting the people who need their services in the center of their ideas. #design-thinking #empathy #processimprovement #solutioninnovation

What specific resources or initiatives would you recommend to young professionals to feel more supported and empowered within the statistics community? 💡 Dr. Lee: To feel more supported and empowered within the statistics community, I highly recommend that young professionals engage with statistical professional organizations. Volunteering with these organizations is a particularly effective way to get started. By actively participating in volunteer work, young members can connect with peers, find mentors, and expand their network.    Professional organizations heavily rely on volunteers to operate, and by actively taking ownership of your volunteer work, you can empower yourself within the community while discovering numerous opportunities for involvement. ⭐Question 4: What advice do you have for other women and minorities who aspire to leadership roles in STEM fields?   💡 Dr. Lee: My advice is rooted in the belief that leadership is about working for the betterment of others. If you're passionate about making a positive impact and have a clear vision, leadership can be a way to make the vision a reality. Don't limit yourself by thinking that leadership is only for someone else. You can be a leader, too, and your passion and vision can bring positive change to the field.   ⭐Question 5: What does success mean to you?   💡 Dr. Lee: Success, to me, means being part of a solution for a better world. It's when I can see that the solution I've contributed to has become tangible. In my everyday work on scientific projects, if I contribute to addressing a scientific question, challenge, or discovery, that's my definition of success. Additionally, when my mentees find their own paths in life and careers, that's another measure of success for me. 

How do we help young leaders navigate the various climates of the current culture? There is a lot at stake for the future of their lives that, I believe, they should have a say in. I think we do three things: 1. We lay it all out, responsibly. In this digital age, information is easily accessible so 8.5 out of 10 young people are already aware of the hot topics. The question isn’t if they know, the question is who are they talking with about it? 2. We give them space to instigate. There are many directions anyone can take when they learn new information. How can we help young people formulate their thoughts and mobilize their response? A part of this is helping them realize civic responsibility. 3. We collectively name purpose. Something I have learned in the last year of strategic planning has been conversations around our “North Star,” something, a mission, a purpose that guides each and everything we do and how we do it. Young leaders need a compass, but they need help building one. I believe this generation is up for the challenge and is key to the future of many realities including education, church, civic engagement, etc. But they need a foundation. They need direction. I want to help bring the empowerment and inspiration.
