Per the article, it stated, “Compared to SWIR edge-emitter lasers (EELs), SWIR VCSELs have ~60% lower power consumption, and the price of a VCSEL is generally much lower (>50%) than an EEL.” I would have thought the cost savings for VCSELs should be much better than 2X compared to EEL, given they can be made using wafer-level scale fabrication and testing. Am I missing something here?

Yesterday, the #photonixFAB consortium announced that it is now open for first prototyping. The objective of this EU-funded project - coordinated by X-FAB - is to establish a European photonics device value chain and initial industrial manufacturing capabilities. According to Youssouf Guerfi, PhD, Project Coordinator for photonixFAB (X-FAB): ”Substantial progress is already being witnessed on photonixFAB, with valuable contributions being made by all of the consortium members. The customer engagement portal is an important milestone in our ongoing journey with this initiative. When AeroDIODE developed their first nanosecond pulsed laser diode driver more than 15 years ago, they couldn’t have predicted how fast the demand would grow for flexible solutions.
