Great new blog post from Bill Robbins, our PR guru at Channel Mastered. Speaking as a reporter myself, I can confirm all seven suggestions he makes, but especially appreciate numbers 4 and 5: --First, I may well cover your news at a show if I have to walk a long way and then figure out where the heck your booth is in a giant expo hall, but if you propose meeting someplace easier, your odds of getting coverage will go up. --Second, sending me briefing info in advance of the interview helps me make optimal use of our limited time together, rather than spend most of it reviewing the basics. There’s more where that came from too. Read and enjoy! #channelmastered

What an absolutely beautiful conversation!! Jacob Puthenparambil caught my attention a few years ago because his name is similar to a former manager's. He kept popping on my timeline and I kept hearing about Redhill without having any clue about what they do. What stood out in this 101-conversation about PR was its authenticity. Paraphrasing some beautiful comments: 1. PR is the earned media spectrum of marketing communications but 90% of it is not related to media and involves key aspects like research, internal Comms, intelligence etc. Some of the more regulated industries like Airlines, Telcos etc involve some sharp elbowed fights to make your point!! 2. Beautiful points about how PR has evolved from the days of fax machines. The desensitization due to the information barrage means you have to do the ground work, hustle and sell to make to make your message newsworthy for the recipients. I sensed authenticity when the guy hinted that it’s possible only when the client's story resonates with you!! 3. Level of PR in Singapore is inferior to London, New York because the journalistic landscape isn’t competitive enough. In comparison India is fierce and if the Govt releases a tender document then 17 business groups show interest with 4 of them owning media houses!! So unlike in Singapore, there is a certain tension between the PR agency, Journalist and the Audience. Then he makes the beautiful comment that “PERFECT TENSION CREATES EFFICIENCY”. 4. Social media has lowered the curative barriers that existed in an earlier era of Journalism. The problem of plenty means you have to make higher dopamine hits to make an impact which then runs the risk of testing factual boundaries!! Compared to paid influencers, perhaps the old school journalism carries more credibility. And in some ways, an engagement with a journalist is a kind of a peer review unlike the typical influencer who is just peddling your version of the story. 5. The media landscape is evolving with falling number of journalists and more funding coming from readers than advertisers. The general media is also fragmenting into niches and media’s ability to retain attention is falling due to a problem of plenty!! Add to this mixture a measurement driven marketing approach which may put a premium on inflated metrics, that may be ineffective!! (Jacob seemed to suggest that this was truer in organizations where PR reports to marketing).
