This Monday, I went to Elysรฉe for an AI summit with many captivating speakers: amongst others, Yann LeCun (Head of FAIR), Eric Schmidt (Former CEO of Google) and Emmanuel Macron (Current CEO of France). The talks brought very interesting points.
Here is what I learned:๐

โจ Most speakers were overwhelmingly positive about the benefits of AI, with Yann LeCun even saying that this revolution
Most emphasized positive aspects of AI:
โค ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต
โค ๐๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป.
โค ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ ๐ด๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐. I found the insight from Bertrand Piccard on this very interesting: many industrial systems are heavily under-optimized.
โค ๐ค Potential negative effects of AI were much less emphasized. Reproduction and development of biases were only hinted, jobs getting replaced at an unprecedented speed and scale not mentioned at all.
โค Most fears were about concentration of power in the hand of a few American mega-corps: basically,

First, what do we need? Eric Schmidt mentioned: you need to have all of these: Hardware, Data, Engineers. But most importantly, you need to build that at an industrial scale. He recognizes that France has the talents and the ambition, but now we need to scale up.
โค ๐ ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ๐: Although the attached chart shows that Europe is terribly late in funding compared to the US, Xavier Niel was optimistic about raising money in France.
โค ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐๐๐ฒ: Thatโs where we lag most behind other continents. Emmanuel Macron mentioned that Europe currently has only 3% of the worldโs GPU, he announced his intent to raise that number to 20% in 2035, and build semi-conductors in France.
โค President Macron mentioned a consequent advantage of France: ๐๐ฒ ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฝ, ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ด๐ thanks to our nuclear fleet ๐ช

โค Thierry Breton spoke about the EU AI Act that he led. I've done another post about this law : I think it is much needed on certain points - protecting copyright for instance, but regulators might have over-regulated other points, like their ill-defined โsystematic riskโ that imposes a lot of additional constraints for LLM builders.
โค Eric Schmidt sees this regulation as as our main hinderance in Europe, mentioning we should โremove regulatory roadblocksโ. He had this inspirational quote: โYou donโt regulate the future, you invent itโ.
๐ค In his final talk, Macron emphasized open source as the way to mitigate biases and integrate the subtleties of our language and culture!
๐ Now back to work, letโs keep building and โinvent the futureโ! ๐
