Eight years ago, I came upon a recipe for a cookie dough made out of blended chickpeas, almond butter and roasted sweet potato. I was intrigued so I went to the store, bought the ingredients and started baking. Initially we roasted the sweet potatoes, blended the chickpeas, mixed the almond butter, and added the vanilla and chocolate chips by hand and with simple home appliances out of our tiny Long Island City commercial kitchen. Fun memories Gregory Struck, Franklin Becker, Zoe Mesirow, Dave Kong! Since then, we’ve sold over one million units of our Hungryroot cookie doughs. They’ve become a fan favorite. They no longer contain sweet potato (too much flavor deviation over time), but the base recipe is largely the same. They’re the only legume based cookie doughs sold at scale, and I truly believe they’re the best cookies you can make (or buy) — I’m sometimes told I should be more humble (Lauren Elkies Schram 😉). This gives me a lot of nostalgia - I remember early ads promising free cookie dough for life!!! Immediately caught my interest with legume-based doughs and an exciting offer 🤩
