As I head to the airport for this year’s Cannes Lions, I am equal parts bullish, excited, and a little nervous. Not only will this be my first time at the world’s largest advertising festival, it’s also the first official Cannes presence for Kroger Precision Marketing. We're going to Cannes because we can't just watch from the sidelines. Retail sales are the ultimate proof of advertising's power, so we have a responsibility to be at the industry's biggest global event. Measuring true sales impact is a more complex conversation than just talking about impressions and clicks—but the end result is worth the effort. I obviously had to share some harsh realities of the best way to achieve a positive ROI on that magnum bottle of rosé at brunch on a Tuesday.. feat #DALL3 Cannes Lions is the epitome of experiential marketing. Standing out and generating a return on investment is no small feat. There are only two variables your boss can rely on to calculate ROI and determine if you’ll be attending again next year - Outcomes versus Costs. Outcomes: To ensure valuable returns, avoid gaps in your schedule. While many advise leaving room for serendipity, remember that 'luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.’ Chance encounters only occur if you attend early morning workouts, dinners with the right vendors, and after-parties conducive to meaningful conversations. Skip most formal content sessions; if your company invested in sending you to an event like Cannes, you likely already know the key insights. Costs: Outside of investing nine figures, the best way to achieve a positive ROI at Cannes is to be smart about where and how you invest. As the proverbial incumbent in my career, I focus on minimizing expenses without compromising the convenience of a tight schedule. To maximize time, I centralize my meetings in a single location that doesn’t charge €16 for a café au lait.

With $1.2 billion in TV-video advertising already sold for the Paris Olympics, NBCUniversal is on track to reel in record revenue for the event, with less than four months to go before it begins. The previous record of $1.25 billion was set by the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, which was held a year later due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Major category ad-revenue gains for this event are coming from marketers including non-alcoholic beverage brands, consumer packaged goods, financial services, retail and entertainment, according to Dan Lovinger, president of Olympic/paralympic partnerships at NBCUniversal. A Super Bowl 2024 ad costs $7 million dollars. No, not, for a 60-second ad; that's $7 million for a 30-second spot. Every year I pick my favorite Super Bowl ad and talk about why it was my favorite. I'm not even going to watch them this year. It's American Airlines who wins Blue2 Media's soon-to-be award for the best use of the Super Bowl in self-promotion. "What did they do," you ask? Some clever marketing person (I wish it was me, and I hope that American Airlines tells us whose idea it was. I would bet $7 million if I had it that it was a 'she.') said, "Let's name the flights we are adding from Kansas City to Vegas after numbers that mean something to the world of Taylor Swift and football, and those they celebrate around it." Flight 1989 (Taylor Swift's most successful album name) is already sold out. Yes, I checked. And of course, there is a flight for Kelce's jersey number (Flight 87), and also other celebrated player's numbers. No official press release was put out by AA, but in a statement they did say... "The excitement surrounding this year's sporting events has never been greater. You could say that after tonight's games, we are in our football era, and we are thrilled to provide additional direct flights from Kansas City to Las Vegas. To our customers who are huge sports fans, look what you made us do." The result? Advertising history. The biggest bang for no buck is my take. Well done, American Airlines.
