I hired someone for a role she shouldn’t have been hired for. More context: Last week, we were looking to hire an executive assistant. We received two resumes. 1- a recent grad who had a business and accounting degree with no experience. - She still doesn't know what she’s looking for, and she might go to a different company that offers a better salary or better growth opportunities.- 2- a woman with almost 5 years of experience as an executive assistant. - I didn’t have to teach her anything. She wasn’t looking to make any changes and would have been able to stay in the role for at least two years. - This looks like a no-brainer, right? #2 was the obvious choice. But you already know what I did by this point. We hired #1. While #2 was the safest choice for the role, #1 was able to compensate for that with her character. We had many things in common, and while we had the interview, I could tell she was humble, resilient, emotionally intelligent, and willing to learn. Most people won’t even get the chance to showcase that in an interview if you just applied online. That’s why you need to compensate for that by networking, but that’s for another post. Moral of the story: Dear companies, recent grads are able to compensate for the lack of experience with soft skills. Dear job seekers, don’t be afraid to apply for roles where you know you have all the potential to fill it in. You never know who’s willing to bet on you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Share this post with your network. And follow me for more content like this.

How can you write a captivating job description that makes people want to join your team? I've helped hire interns, part time, and full-time staff in my last 20 years working and here are some nuggets to consider when finding talent and writing job descriptions. • Lead with the vision of your organization. • paint a picture of the future so clear that you could step into it. • attempt to solve a problem big enough that you'll need an entire team to solve it, and not just on your own. • talk about your team and culture • make your job summary so captivating that people would say, "I want that job!" "𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩? RREK stands for • Role • Responsibilities • Expectations • and Key Numbers. spend ample time crafting your job description and thinking through what does success look like with this new team mate. How do you think about hiring team mates? JOB SEARCH PUBLIC JOURNAL ENTRY DAY 3 Friday, 11/3/2023 12:20 pm PST - - - - - Hey, everyone. I'm back. Hope your Friday (or Saturday for my APAC friends) is going well. In yesterday's JOB SEARCH PUBLIC JOURNAL ENTRY I shared a few things that I've learned from past job searches. One of them was: Put out into the world exactly what I want. So here's what I want: I want a role where I'm trusted and expected to bring in empowering, connecting social learning experiences that evolve the way people see themselves and each other, and transform team and company culture. I want to work with a small team of people who also want this. A team that understands that social learning—learning from each other in community—is the best way to change culture. I want colleagues who are wise and collaborative thought partners, who understand that change takes time. I want to work for a company that doesn't think learning starts and stops with LMS. And that doesn't rely on "expert" presenters or speakers to supply the majority of employee learning. I want to work for a company that values the lost art of listening, that sees space holding and group facilitation as essential skillsets, and that understands that reflection is an action. I want to work for a company that sees the inherent value of diversity and inclusion and equity, and isn't cowed by current trends and backlash against those things. I don't care what my title is or what level of the organization I'm in. As long as I have autonomy and decision making authority (budget, content, programs, etc.), I'm fine. Ideally, I want to work in a smaller to mid-size organization—say, 500–2000 people. I would work in a larger org if other conditions felt right, but I don't want every decision to have to go through ten people before it gets approved. Ideally, I want to work for a company that has offices in San Francisco or the East Bay. I'm fine working from home if/as needed, but I really miss going into the office with other colleagues. I want to work for a company that has a distributed workforce around the globe. I want to travel about 15–20% of the time to really connect with the people in different locations. I want a salary of ~150K. I want benefits for myself and my family, so my partner doesn't feel like she has to keep her benefit-supplying job that she is burnt out on. I want to work in a company that values empathy, curiosity, compassion, equanimity, and community. I want to work with leaders who are vulnerable and courageous and who are willing to participate in (not just approve of) the social learning experiences I/we design and facilitate. I want to work with a tech team to help me incorporate technology and data storytelling into the social learning experiences. Okay, that's what I got for today. I'm sure there's more that I want, but I'm running out of characters. So, now that you've seen what I want, know anyone I should talk to? With gratitude and appreciation, Jared

📝 Want to stand out from the competition and bolster the skills section on your resume? Here are my top tips to help you make an impact. 1️⃣ Identify Relevant Skills: 🔍 Start by identifying the skills that are most relevant to the job you're targeting. Review the job description and research the industry to understand the key skills employers are seeking. Focus on both hard skills (technical abilities) and soft skills (interpersonal and transferable skills). 2️⃣ Show, Don't Just Tell: 💪 Don't just list your skills; demonstrate them with concrete examples. Include specific achievements and experiences that highlight your proficiency in each skill. Quantify your accomplishments whenever possible to showcase the impact you've made in previous roles. 3️⃣ Leverage Online Resources: 🌐 Take advantage of online learning platforms and courses to bolster your skills. Websites like LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, and Udemy offer a wide range of courses and certifications in various domains. These online resources can help you acquire new skills or enhance existing ones. 4️⃣ Seek Professional Development Opportunities: 📚 Look for professional development opportunities within your organization or industry. Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars related to your field.
