BALKAN BLOG: The creeping success of the far right in Southeast Europe #bne #bneEditorsPicks #Bulgaria #SEE #romania #croatia #EuropeanParliamentElections The June 9 European Parliament elections in Southeast Europe were first and foremost victories for more or less centrist parties, with the victors in Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Slovenia all hailing from either the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) grouping or (in Romania’s case) the centre-left Socialists & Democrats. This contrasts with the dramatic shift to the far right seen in France, where the victory for the National Rally prompted President Emmanuel Macron to call a snap general election, and other West European countries. However, while far-right parties were not among the winning parties in Southeast Europe, the European elections continued the trend of their creeping success that has turned them into the main opposition in Bulgaria and Romania, and as of last month the junior ruling party in Croatia.

According to the French politician, the French authorities’ rhetoric concerning Russia is unlikely to change. "Neither of the candidates wanted to change anything in relations with Moscow," he said. According to the preliminary results of voting at the early parliamentary elections, the leftist New Popular Front is leading in the second round of France’s early parliamentary elections and may count on from 182 to 193 seats in the National Assembly (lower house of parliament). The presidential Together For the Republic coalition is winning from 157 to 163 seats in the national legislature, while the right-wing National Rally may have from 136 to 144 seats. #business #finance #financialservices

My latest paper for the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, adapted from and expanding upon my talk at the European Parliament last month. What Beijing did, why, and did it work? More fundamentally, I make the case that "Whatever role Chinese interference played in the 2024 elections, it was insufficient to yield an administration that Beijing will be willing to work with – a situation that has held for three presidential elections in a row. Unless it revises its approach to influencing Taiwan and begins to offer real incentives for rapprochement that are not transactional and not simply attempts to erode Taiwan’s freedoms and democracy, it is unlikely that future elections will be any different. The resilience of the Taiwanese people, added to the highly incompatible systems across the Taiwan Strait and clear examples of the costs of giving in to Beijing, all ensure that coercion alone is insufficient to give Beijing the control it wants over Taiwan’s democracy."

The results of the EU parliamentary elections were in line with last week's note, so I assumed the remainder of June would be focused on whether Commission President von der Leyen would gain a second term. Because Mr. Macron has other ideas, France will receive all the attention over the next three weeks. Von der Leyen will, however, work behind the scenes to gain the support of EU leaders before their summit on June 27. She will emphasize three reasons to support her. First, she is the only available candidate who can get the support of the leaders and cobble together a majority among MEPs. Second, she steered the EU through the crises of COVID and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Very insightful reading. According to research conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), the EU legislature will become more fragmented than ever before, with the “old guard” center-left liberal coalition struggling to retain the majority that currently enables it to dominate the agenda.
