Patient Advocate/Patient Partner in Research - Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Other Complex Chronic Illnesses
I’m always surprised by how many inclusion committees and discussions still exclude ableism, disability and accessibility needs from their discussions. How many times I use my wheelchair and feel separated from everyone else because someone’s idea of accessibility is different than my reality. Or how I’m told a space is accessible…but I have to go around back for a ramp, to a locked door and back again, only to find they forgot the 5-10 stairs I’d have to deal with, when I finally got inside. Or how many people think standing events are appropriate. (They’re not. And adding a chair or two at the back doesn’t change that.) Or how we’re hosting inside events without masks and purifiers. (Leading to more chronic illness and disability. Yes. I said it.) So yes, please include people with lived experience of disability in your discussions and plans. I promise you, your events will be better for it.
There will be no “justice for all” as long as ableism goes unmentioned and unaddressed in conversations about equity. It is no longer a secret. However, it is overlooked while having an untold impact on more than 1.4 billion people across the world. #DisabilityPrideMonth #Ableism #DisabilityRights #HumanRights #SDGs #Diversity #Equity #DisabilityInclusion

Today is #WorldInclusionDay World Inclusion Day is held on October 10th and is dedicated to ensuring that people of diverse abilities, conditions, ages, races, religions, genders, and other characteristics are accepted, welcomed, and treated fairly. How ironic that we held our Inclusion Workstream meeting today where we discussed ways of being more ‘Inclusive’ to our peers in other regions! #DEI in theory and in practice! https://lnkd.in/g__gUJ_B

Ableism and eugenicist attitudes are a major problem that gets too little attention. Ableism is a very serious and pervasive problem in Canada that has led to significant poverty, overwhelming social burden, human suffering and premature death. A driving force behind this issue are poorly addressed discriminatory barriers to higher education, employment, medical care and justice for Canadians living with disability. #ableism #disabilityawareness #disabilityrights #oppression #discriminationlaw #humanrights

#diversityandinclusion is not easy. Most organizations do want and need a more equitable and inclusive environment but it is a struggle. Humans are hardwired to be biased, to stick with their tribe and be wary of those who are different. Organizations and communities thrive on cooperation and collaboration between humans. The DEI journey aims to bride this gap! This quick lesson highlights the questions that need to be asked as we prepare for the age of #DEI.#deileaders #equityandinclusion #workenvironment Growing Leadership of Women
