Do you know how to think FAST and act FAST this National #Stroke Week? With one stroke occurring every 19 minutes in Australia, FAST is an easy way to remember the most common signs of stroke: facial droop, arms not working, slurred speech, time is critical for best outcomes - call an ambulance right away. At the Monash Victorian Heart Institute we are lucky to be home to the expertise of Monash's Stroke and Ageing Group. Stroke and heart disease are closely related, both are often caused by the same health problems. By working together can we find novel solutions for cardiovascular disease and reduce the risk and burden of stroke.
#Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally, with 16 million people suffering strokes annually. Closer to home, one stroke occurs every 19 minutes and over 440,000 Australians are living with stroke in 2020, in addition to about 30,000 new patients with acute stroke each year (National Stroke Foundation). Stroke symptoms are recognised by the mnemonic FAST: F - Face A - Arms S - Speech T - Time FAST helps people remember the common signs of a stroke: facial droop, arms not working, slurred speech. If you or your loved ones experience these symptoms, it means there is literally no time to waste in calling an ambulance. Learn to act FAST this Stroke Week - you could save a life! #StrokeWeek #MUHeartHealth
