So often we hear about the negative side of #PFI But what about those projects that are getting on with things under the radar, working well with their client councils and sorting out issues collaboratively as they arise? A great example of this has been seen this week where a council in England has agreed to pay a contribution towards remedial work as a "gesture of goodwill" and to help keep the partnership relationship healthy. While public buildings across the country remain closed or partially closed due to concerns over RAAC, with many wondering how they will pay for the full remedial works or how they start to engage the industry to undertake the work, this leisure centre PFI has shown how the model can work at its best, dealing with the problem and worrying about how to pay for it later. This is how and why partnerships can be about more than just giving the public sector access to private sector cash. https://lnkd.in/e9Qc9Rg5

Last week our Surrey board member Gabriel Makinwa spoke on a panel at the Wates Group pavilion at the UKREiiF conference. Great job by Neil Bradley for moderating and fellow panellists Emma Weller, Oliver Brooks Ben Jowett for contributing to a great conversation. A few really interesting take aways: - There’s an appetite from all parts of the supply chain to move from a risk mitigation approach typical of contracting to more relationship based approach. - The fragmented nature of construction with several stakeholders makes it even harder for technology to make a real difference as companies use different systems that don’t speak to each other. Is there room for a shared framework that all systems must connect into? - The productivity in the construction industry has not increased at the same rate as spend on technology so there’s a huge gap still to be filled here. - We need government, property developers, designers, consultants and contractors to rethink the way we deliver projects. Everyone focuses on protecting their downside vs optimising for shared upside. If you would like to discuss these important points why not catch Gabriel at our next Surrey event on 19th June. https://lnkd.in/e7Sr_QPa #UKREIIF #ukconstruction #constructiontech #proptech #construction #wates

Do you know how expensive it is to retrofit historic and listed buildings? While there isn't an official number available—as the works, and therefore the costs, are different for each building—experts don't paint a very pretty picture. According to Adas Rico Wojtulewicz-Richmond, a minimum of £40bn would be necessary to retrofit listed buildings alone—not a job for the faint hearted! We uncover all the intricacies of retrofitting historic and listed buildings while keeping their cultural value in the latest issue of the B&C Magazine, with the help of experts from John McAslan + Partners, Grosvenor, National Federation of Builders (NFB), National Trust and Historic England. Our Latest Thinking | When RAAC is the tip of the iceberg There is a chain of events that estate managers can be all too familiar with. An emergency fix which, on the face of it, seems reasonably containable turns out to be the tip of the iceberg leading to a larger set of problems that need to be addressed. This is one of the scenarios that can happen when surveying for RAAC and why we advise clients to take a holistic approach to find the best long term solution. As part of RLB’s RAAC insights series, RLB Partner and National Head of Education, Stephen Scott shares his thoughts on the topic here: https://lnkd.in/eCGDERYD #Construction #RLB #CreatingABetterTomorrow #RAAC

👑 King Charles's historic first speech was delivered yesterday, but the construction industry is disappointed. Here's why: 1️⃣ No Focus on Housebuilding: The King's Speech barely touched on the housing crisis. The Federation of Master Builders highlighted that it missed the chance to address the alarming decline in housebuilding rates and improve our homes. 🏠 2️⃣ Energy-Efficiency Letdown: The government stepped back from higher energy-efficiency standards for rentals, disappointing the RICS. 🌍 3️⃣ Architects' Concerns: RIBA President Muyiwa Oki wants more action on the housing crisis and climate emergency, rightly describing this as a missed opportunity. 🏗️🌱 Share your thoughts below. What do you think? 💬 https://lnkd.in/esBKpNmS #KingSpeech #Construction #HousingCrisis #ClimateAction #LinkedInEngagement
