Good evening all, my colleague Katie Lysakowski is recruiting for a study, "which seeks to understand more about how parents share their cultural values and beliefs about death and grief with their bereaved and/or grieving child(ren)." Katie is "seeking parents/caregivers who differ from each other in their cultural identities (i.e., ethnicity, religion, nationality) and are willing to discuss how they are navigating/approaching their parent-child conversations about death and grief after a significant death, or in anticipation of one." Polka Dot Powerhouse meaning to me in 10 days. Day 3 CONNECTIONS Google’s Meaning: A relationship in which a person, thing or idea is linked or associated with something else. My meaning: As we move through life we come across many connections, some wanted and some not, but we become connected for a reason. Every connection we make has a purpose and sometimes we may never know what that is, and sometimes it hits you “wham” and you get this overpowering sense of “aha, that’s why we met” come through. I hope you all know what I am talking about. Have you ever thought “oh there is a reason I bumped into her today” or “there was a reason I went to that meeting,” that is what I am talking about. That happens all the time in Polka Dot, the people, the connections I have made, are just showing up at the right time, and every time we chat I find something we have in common; it is surprising to me how after one simple conversation I can feel so connected, but I do. A year ago, my husband and I moved to the Denver area because we were concerned for our long-term safety as a gay married couple in Texas. My employer supported the transition from hybrid to remote work, we bought a house, sold a car to fund the move, and 🎶drove all niiight🎶 to start a new chapter in our first home. Now, I'm one of many in the Gaming/Tech industries who find ourselves laid off for the holidays. Who have more questions than answers about what next year brings. I know we "keep it professional" here, but the situation is Objectively Not Great for everyone impacted. Personally, student loans and a mortgage loom. Professionally, I am one of many in a sea of amazing, experienced, talented job seekers (and friends!) who find ourselves in the same boat. We are supporting one another while directly competing with one another. Being #opentowork and #jobsearching is tough as is; but during the holidays, when you look at your life through a magnifying glass, whatever you don't have is overwhelming. And in my opinion, stating that fact on LinkedIn is not (and shouldn't be considered) taboo, gauche, or unprofessional. To my fellow #jobseekers: give yourself some grace this holiday season. Find a moment to unclench your jaw, relax your shoulders, have a big glass of water, and enjoy a sweet treat. Watch a bad movie. Tell a good joke. Savor the immutable constants which remind you who you are, and how that person is so much more than employment status.
