HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEFY!🎉🎊🥳 Yesterday, we celebrated DEFY's 7th Birthday. For us, DEFY has always been a child, personified with character, growth, mischief and joy. This little baby is growing and fast, and learning things along the way. And like any parents (or a community of carers), we hope that she will learn the best the world has to offer. That she will learn to express itself, but also to listen and empathise with others. That she will aim high, but never forget to have fun. That she will do beautiful things in her lifetime, but will also know that the ways in which we achieve our goals matters just as much as the goals themselves. Many years ago, we put down a set of values that DEFY and her people should live by. We did not want to put values that sound great, but rather values that we already embodied as a small group then. Values that would guide us in making small and big decisions, and pull us back onto our path each time we are about to step off. Today we are much larger, with almost 100 individuals working on DEFY's ideas, spanning across several organisations. These values, in the form of culture, have so beautifully spread beyond our imagination, that we started believing in the idea of DEFY as a movement as opposed to an organisation. A community of committed individuals who are not afraid to ask hard questions, and seek out answers to these questions. Not intimidated by the vastness of status-quos, but instead find some pride and humour in challenging them. As anyone who has come in proximity to DEFY will tell you, that one need not have a contract with DEFY to become a part of this community. It only just takes believing in change, and having a fiery appetite to stick through it through a lifetime. After 7 years, we are sharing our values with you. We are sharing what it has taken us to be "Defiant". Why did it take us so long to share this? Because we wanted to first be sure that we can ourselves do justice to these values. Yesterday, I celebrated my 60th birthday. Here are a few things I've learned along the way to this milestone: -God, family, friends, work is the right order. -Bad pizza is still pizza. -A cloudy day at the beach is still a day at the beach. -Thinking you’re right doesn’t mean it’s true. -Thinking someone else is wrong also doesn’t mean it’s true. -Actually, there are dumb questions. -God will absolutely give you more than you can handle, but not more than He can handle. -Learning to say “no” is a game changer. -Wisdom is what happens when you run out of dumb things to do. -There’s too much politics and not enough party in today's political parties. -Every situation can teach you something even if the lesson is what NOT to do. -You’re capable of more than you give yourself credit for. -Kindness matters. -Love wins. -Being generous doesn’t always involve money. -Time is precious, don’t waste it. -Regretting your past mistakes is pointless. Accept them, learn from them, and move on! -Things don’t always have to happen for a reason. -Forgiveness is for you, not them. -Never miss a chance to make someone laugh. -I have no idea how to “act my age”. I’ve never been this old before! Thanks for reading!
