Passing the baton. It’s the ultimate test and responsibility of a leader. The truth is, you never really know if your team is ready. When it was my time, it felt like I was thrown in the deep end of the pool. Fortunately, the time and effort that my mentor put in with me were available when necessary. The teacher will appear when the student is ready. Suddenly, everything made sense. All those seemingly random decisions, the mentorship, the tough love – it was all preparation. Our team? They’re preparing everyday. Hell, they’re hungrier than I was at their age (and in many ways, better). It’s my job to continue the growth and to prepare them for whatever comes next. But here’s the key: their growth depends on their ability to develop the next generation of leaders. They need to be mentoring, coaching, building a team that’s even stronger than the one they inherited; this is their next challenge and their next chapter. That’s the cycle of leadership. It’s not just about reaching the top, it’s about bringing others with you. And most importantly, it’s about creating a legacy that outlasts your own time in the spotlight.
Brian I appreciate your honesty and leadership. Always bringing the gems 💎, will talk to you real soon for some tips. You have helped me before and I thank you in advance.💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾🙏🏾
Amen!
Always felt this is something a lot of Leaders in our industry don't think a lot about. Not being critical, there's just so many other things going on in the moment. So when is someone ready to take the next step in management? I don't know how to know that until you've made that change. Think one way to tell might be if when you leave the store for a few days for whatever reason, what changes if anything. When I was thinking of promoting a Salesperson to Manager I would ask that person to write a job description of the new position. From that you can at least know what they don't know and what you need to teach them. Brian you could likely write a good article on this and map out a way to bring focus on it to help others, because it certainly is a big deal that effects a lot of people. And I think you'd likely do a good job too
Absolutely love this perspective on leadership! It's so true that the real mark of a leader is not just in reaching the top but in preparing and empowering the next generation to rise even higher. The journey of mentorship and growth is continuous, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see those you’ve guided thrive and lead with the same passion and dedication. Passing the baton isn't just a moment, it's a legacy in the making. Keep inspiring and building up your team – the future of leadership depends on it!
Great share Brian. A majority of organizations find themselves under prepared for critical leadership transitions. There are many transitional challenges that organizations will not have full control over. To hedge that, top organizations often have strong training, development & succession planning. Take time to train leaders on building trust, equity and as you said creating a culture that values bringing others with you. The best leaders spend a good portion of their time developing other leaders
If you don't bring others with you, you were never a leader and never made it to the top.
Leadership is about passing the baton and building a legacy that lasts.
Excellent points and I am positive you will have new leaders groomed very well prior to the passing of the baton.
Can I relate this to lineage Brian Benstock? That’s how I manage my family - my awesome kids. Now 28 and 30, the boy with the Dodgers the girl with Disney - all while being involved in family business. The future keeps getting stronger. Chris

2wWell said. Sometimes a teacher’s success hinges on the quality of their students, as dedicated and devoted learners who engage positively with lessons reflect and amplify the teacher’s abilities. The students' learning behavior and commitment directly impact the effectiveness and reputation of the teacher’s instructions and experience, hence the cycle of leadership.
