“You are forced to carry a gun to defend yourself.” Kululu was a child soldier but now uses his first-hand experience to help kids be kids by creating positive change through storytelling for our Life in Lulu radio drama in South Sudan. Experts estimate that in February 2021, there were between 7,000 and 19,000 child soldiers in the country – and children are still being recruited to fight. Life in Lulu storylines highlight these and other social challenges in the country, including the impact of dangerous power dynamics and sexual and gender-based violence. Our next series focuses on gender-based and intimate partner violence, modelling different solutions and alternatives to help create gender equality for women and girls. Engaging men and boys is key in the journey to prevent violence against women and girls. Here's why it matters: ✨ Promoting gender equality ✨ Advocating for policy changes ✨ Creating positive male role models ✨ Breaking the cycle of violence by addressing its root causes ✨ Rejecting toxic norms ✨ Influencing behavioural change We supported our partner Equimundo (Formerly Promundo-US) to replicate their Programme H, an evidence-based project developed in Rio de Janeiro in 2001, in Lebanon in 2014. The aim of the project was to encourage men and boys to challenge gender-based stereotypes, question traditional ideas of manhood, and contribute to ending all forms of gender-based violence in Lebanon. Since 2014, we have remained committed to investing in organisations dedicated to preventing gender-based violence. Join us in building a safer, more equal world. 🤝 #Womanity #GenderBasedViolence #EmpowerWomen #EndDomesticViolence #16DaysOfActivism #16Days

It’s International Women’s Day! 😔 This year, I believe there is nothing to celebrate, as long as women and girls in Gaza, Tigray, Sudan, Afghanistan and beyond are being killed and abused. Women and girls, especially those in conflict-affected settings, are disproportionately affected by: 🚨Increased risks of gender-based violence 🚨Loss of livelihood opportunities 🚨Greater food insecurity The world is at crossroads for #GenderEquality, standing up for women’s rights is more CRUCIAL than ever. That’s why at UN Women, this #InternationalWomensDay, we are calling to #InvestInWomen to accelerate progress for gender equality. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ezmmjKRh #IWD2024

A female parliamentary candidate receives violent threats on social media during her campaign. A young girl is forced to leave school and marry at 15. A young woman is physically abused by her partner at home. What do all these scenarios have in common? They are all examples of gender-based violence (GBV). In Iraq, 1.32 million people are at risk of GBV and a staggering 75% of them are women and girls. 👩🏽👧🏽 To transform harmful social norms and attitudes towards GBV in Iraq, MAGENTA adapted and piloted UNICEF's Communities Care programme in Kurdistan. The results of the sessions demonstrate real transformation: ⬆️ 25-30% increased in positive attitudes towards gender equality ⬆️ 34-52% increase in disagreement with discriminatory gender beliefs ⬇️ 17-34% reduction in attitudes which support domestic violence. I just read the African Union strategy on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) 2018-2028 which was launched during the AU Summit February 2019. I found all the pillars interesting especially the one that focuses on the dignity and security of women and girls. As it is no longer news that women security and psychological integrity are often compromised and are subjected to violations in Africa with various form of violence such as; harmful traditional practices like early-child marriage, breast ironing and female genital mutilation. The GEWE Strategy proposes to implement AU guidelines on Ending Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) and fund national projects to penalise VAWG. As a Gender and Development Lawyer who specializes in gender based violence against women and girls, I consider those guidelines innovative because women and girls would be protected from gender based violence and they can fulfill their potentials in Africa. #notoviolence #notorape #sdg5 #genderequality #womenempoweringwomen #ngo #notosexualviolence

Gender Justice: A Fundamental Human Right! In Uganda, the statistics on violence against women and girls are alarming: - 95% of Ugandan women have experienced physical and sexual violence. - 1 in 3 women face physical or sexual violence (UBOS, 2020). - 43% of girls in East Africa marry before age 18 (UNICEF, 2020). - Women in Uganda are three times more likely to suffer gender-based violence than men (UBOS, 2020). It is through dedicated efforts and unified action, that we can build a more just and inclusive society for everyone-where every woman can live free from the menace of violence. Gender-based violence is endemic in South Africa. With 25 - 40% of women having experienced sexual and or physical intimate partner violence in their lifetime. Goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals is Gender Equality, in which one of the targets is to eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking, sexual and other types of exploitation. We are halfway to the Agenda 2030, and South Africa is far from achieving this target. 📢 In Uganda, whether in a context of conflict or peace, Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) continue to face gender-specific forms of verbal & physical violence, including sexual violence just because of who they are & their fight for gender equality. Society must acknowledge the sacrifices of WHRDs, stand in solidarity with them & work collaboratively towards eradicating the societal norms that inhibit progress. It is a moral imperative to amplify their voices & strengthen their ranks with resources.
