In the 1920s, new building construction technologies changed the residential character of the Kings Cross area. Boarding houses (adapted from earlier villas) were demolished to make room for six- and eight-story apartment buildings.
The Cross became a very modern place. Its apartment-style living, food and entertainment options, new neon advertising signs, and "increasingly liberal attitude to life and living" launched the area's reputation as a destination for nighttime entertainment and dining.
The mix of nationalities in Kings Cross became pronounced through the 1930s, as the area became popular with newly arrived migrants escaping the growing threat of fascism in Europe. As the population diversified, so did the types of food in the restaurants and cafés.
Soon after the start of World War II, Hasty Tasty introduced an Americanized version of the fast-food café, serving burgers, grills, and coffees just in time for the influx of United States service members.
