I had the honor of sharing my Trauma-Sensitive Workplace plan and ideas with Luis Miguel Gallardo founder of the World Happiness Foundation yesterday. These conversations are vital to me and the work. One of my favorite parts of our discussion was the effects of trauma and trauma response on the food we eat. The workers who grow, harvest, and prepare our foods at restaurants often have high levels of cultural, intergenerational/epigenetic, childhood, community, and climate trauma. Additionally, the restaurant industry is notoriously high stress (I mean have you watched The Bear????) with a lack of wellbeing considerations for employees and little sense of security and safety in the practices which activates trauma response. Each of these scared, hurting, stressed, confused, angry, etc. individuals in their trauma response handling the food we ingest. The energy transfer is significant in food and so we take in a portion of that fear, hurt, anger, sadness, insecurity and more. From the ground the seeds are sown into to the hands that harvest it to the cook who prepares it to the individual packaging it. I believe this issue may only be second to the chemicals the US allows in its foods that other countries ban and the Monsanto-zing of our food supplies as why we are more sick than ever before. Like many, you may believe that trauma doesn't affects you, but believe me when I say that it does…in multiple ways every day. If you can’t make the simple changes to create psychological safety and trauma-informed care in our businesses for the trauma survivors from a place of empathy…do it for your own health and the health of your business as the bottom line impacts are immense as well.
