Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) have developed a universal battery charger for electric vehicles (EVs) that can charge a wide range of vehicles, from two-wheelers to heavy-duty vehicles, with a single charging unit. This charger provides a voltage range of 120-900 V from a universal input power supply, potentially eliminating the need for different chargers for various types of vehicles. The charger is designed to be portable and can be used in different countries by changing the controller programming to suit the local input power supply. The research, led by Dr. Deepak Ronanki, Assistant Professor at IIT-M, aims to address the lack of charging infrastructure as one of the major limitations for the widespread adoption of EVs. The charger can modify the available input power supply according to the EV's requirements and deliver an output voltage based on the battery pack voltages, mimicking the functionality of fossil fuel stations Follow Humans Of EV #ev #evnews #electricvehicle #evcharging #evbattery #evindustry #evs #evchargingstation #humansofev #IITMadras #ElectricVehicles #EVCharging #BatterySwapping #EVs https://lnkd.in/gp9cY9Gn

EV Battery that Charges in 5 mins (Research) 🔋 A team led by Professor Lynden Archer from Cornell Engineering has developed a revolutionary lithium battery capable of charging in just five minutes. This innovation could significantly alleviate the long charging times associated with electric vehicles (EVs), potentially boosting their popularity. Globally, nations are focusing on electrifying transportation to reduce emissions, with an emphasis on road vehicles like cars, buses, and trucks. This shift includes plans to phase out fossil fuel-powered cars in the coming decade. Despite advancements, the quickest existing commercial EV chargers take a minimum of 30 minutes for a full charge, a significant reduction from the 8 hours required by standard home chargers, but still not ideal for widespread EV adoption. Professor Archer notes that with a five-minute charging capability, EVs wouldn't need large batteries for extended range, potentially lowering costs and fostering broader adoption. Archer's team, known for their work on lithium-ion battery charging, shifted their focus to the kinetics of electrochemical reactions, specifically examining the Damköhler number which relates to reaction rates and material transport. They identified indium, a soft metal, as a key material due to its low migration energy barrier and high exchange current density, facilitating rapid charging and durable storage. The main innovation lies in allowing metal ions at the anode to reconfigure before participating in charge storage, leading to batteries that can charge quickly and endure thousands of cycles. The team proposes that coupling this technology with wireless charging could further reduce the size and cost of EV batteries. However, there's a challenge: indium's high density may not be ideal for battery packs. The research team is now exploring lighter alternative materials with similar properties to indium.
