In the wake of the pandemic, Transparency and Accountability Initiative (TAI) partnered with Alliance magazine to analyze global aid trends. Jenny Lah's study revealed shifts in funding dynamics: international funding dropped from $34 billion to $26 billion in 2021. Philanthropy, however, increased by $93 million, focusing on governance, health, and the environment. Major contributors like Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust played crucial roles. Despite challenges, this change opens collaborative opportunities, especially in transparency and accountability initiatives, vital for global sectors. The WES Mariam Assefa Fund, the philanthropic arm of World Education Services, is committed to building an inclusive economy that works for immigrants and refugees. The Fund’s Elevating Migrant Leadership: Building Inclusive Futures Funding Opportunity seeks proposals from organizations in the United States that are elevating the voices and leadership of immigrants and refugees. Support will be provided to organizations that work with immigrants and refugees who are seeking to develop civic leadership and advocacy skills so they can more effectively influence the development of programs and policies that affect them and their communities. Supported programs must focus on two out of three of the following areas: narrative building, experiential learning, and mentorship. Selected awardees will receive $100,000 grants and have access to peer-learning, capacity building, and other programming. Nonprofit organizations in the U.S., or organizations with a fiscal sponsor, that have a mission and vision explicitly focused on serving immigrants and refugees and have an operating budget equal to or less than $3 million are eligible to apply. Call 516.410.4895, or email getfunded@christine-taylor.com for a free fee quote to have us write your entire proposal, or edit your draft, for a reasonable flat fee. https://lnkd.in/eNHq22vx Bev Browning Holly Rustick

I spoke recently with Soheir Asaad of #RawaFund, a Palestinian participatory grantmaker that has worked for several years to provide a community-based alternative to foreign aid. Since October, they have been working to hold donors accountable for cutting funds to grassroots Palestinian groups, or restricting political expression for their staff or grantees. Some highlights from our conversation: ♦ On aid — “I think the growing realization for many grassroots leaders has been that funding has harmed us; that money has been part of a pattern of harm and violence that we have seen directed at Palestine for years." ♦ On development — “We need to shift the way we approach community liberatory work. We want to start the conversation not with “How much money do we need from funders?”, but rather: “What is our agenda, how do we want to pursue it, and what kind of resources and knowledge do we already have in our community?” ♦ On accountability — "What interests us in accountability is not going after the mainstream foundations or governmental agencies that aren’t even ashamed to put their position out. We want to pursue accountability of progressive donors, who have made Palestine an exception [to their principles of equity and justice]." ♦ On solidarity — “We have seen over and over again solidarity that falls down, or solidarity that comes to dictate what is better for us, what is more pragmatic, what will make people listen. We as Palestinians don’t want to make people listen anymore. We want to say our own truth."
