Researchers from Michigan State University have successfully demonstrated that common table salt, sodium chloride, can serve as a potent and cost-effective catalyst for recycling plastic, particularly in the pyrolysis process. Their work has shown that table salt alone can effectively eliminate the wax byproduct produced during the pyrolysis of polyolefins, which make up 60% of plastic waste. This simple solution has the potential to significantly reduce costs and improve the efficiency of plastic recycling, even outperforming much pricier catalysts currently in use. It serves as a compelling example of how sometimes, simple, and affordable solutions can effectively address major challenges, such as plastic recycling. American Chemistry Council’s Plastics Division Issues Principles to Support Growth of Bio-based Plastics Innovation in U.S. Includes Incentives 💰 : Any government investment, production incentives or credits should be designed to provide a level playing field with other biogenic product market incentives across the value chain and for all in-scope bio-based plastics. Policy Goals 🥅 : Develop ambitions for bio-based plastics in coordination with other Federal goals and targets for chemical and plastics circularity; and ensure both recycled and bio-based plastics are counted as potential contributors towards a circular economy. Recycling ♻ : Advocate for bio-based plastics policies that support mechanical, advanced, and organics recycling capabilities, and ensure bio-based plastics that are recycled are included in recycling reporting. Both the U.S. and China are now producing a surplus of the industrial chemicals, like ethylene, used to make popular plastics such as polyethylene, to the point that new (“virgin”) plastics are cheaper than recycled alternatives. Vinyl Institute concluded in a 1986 report that “recycling cannot be considered a permanent solid waste solution” to plastics, as it merely prolongs the time until an item is disposed of.” Among the biggest plastics producers in the U.S. are ExxonMobil and Shell. Industry trade associations like the American Chemical Council and the Plastics Industry Association have routinely lobbied to kill or weaken efforts to limit plastics usage and regulate toxins used in their production. Sustainability and plastics aren't terms that fit together.

Today, Freepoint Eco-Systems and Dow announce a new collaboration to transform plastic waste into new products and packaging.    Dow will be the sole offtaker of Freepoint Eco-Systems' output in phase one of its Eloy, Arizona facility, transforming the certified-circular liquid supply into virgin-equivalent plastics for a variety of critical applications including food-grade, medical, and pharmaceutical packaging.    Slated to launch by 2026, Freepoint Eco-Systems’ advanced recycling facility will be ISCC Plus-Certified, repurposing end-of-life plastics otherwise destined for landfill or incineration into an estimated 65,000 metric tons of waste-derived oil per year.    The collaboration reflects Freepoint and Dow’s shared commitment to advancing more sustainable, commercially viable, innovative solutions that build a global circular economy.    #transformthewaste #circulareconomy #pyrolysis #plasticwaste #closedloopplastics 

oxo biodegradable plastics are materials that are mainly made of standard conventional plastics such as PE, PP, PET etc. with some “special” additives. These additives are catalytic materials which help the products to biodegrade in a two-step process: oxidation and then biodegradation. A recent Court decision, based on scientific studies available at the time of the Single use Plastics Directive’s adoption, highlights concerns about the low to non-existent level of biodegradation of this material.
