Standing next to these 18 flags was a stark reminder of why we do what we do at the UWC Schools and Colleges. The 18 flags (at the entrance of the UWC USA, Montezuma campus) represent the 18 states in which we are situated across the world. At the United World Colleges’ council meeting a few weeks back in New Mexico, I alongside other UWC College Heads, National Committee representatives, Admission Directors, Chairs of college Boards and the UWC International Office staff, explored the future of the UWC and took stock of what makes the UWCs special.
As we shared experiences across the network of schools and colleges, I discovered that what unites us is greater than what variations exists among us; be those of contexts, geo-politics and regional settings. The UWC schools are a true testament of what great strength emerges from acts of commitment and intentionality. The sense of purpose for why we exist is to foster a greater goodness for humanity – encompassed in our UWC Mission of making education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

Nearly 100 African American boys from Icon Preparatory School attended the 2024 B.U.B.B.A. Sons in Suits Community Awards in Tampa, Florida. Dressed as kings, these young gentlemen proudly accepted their accolades, symbolizing their achievements and potential. The event celebrates and uplifts young boys and men of color, inspiring them to greatness.
I have a professional update to celebrate (and others to come!).
I have been selected the 2024 Educator of the Year by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees. This is the highest honor award for excellence in teaching in the entire Minnesota State system. Only 4 are selected out of dozens of applications.
I am grateful to have several mentors and inspiring students in my professional journey who motivated me to pursue better and more innovative ways to delivery my teaching and to connect students to more relatable experiences and real world examples with maintaining high academic rigor.
Some of my innovations include mixing a traditional course on Labor Economics with a study abroad component, jigsaw activities to discussed peer-reviewed articles, simulations of immigration process experiences, Pre and Post Debates, self introductions in online courses with sharing gratitude and savoring experiences, and incorporating students to real data to analyze local issues.
Further, my activities also include direct discussions on equity, disparities, implicit bias, and examples that demystify the economics profession. #IlookLikeAnEconomist

On Tuesday evening, I had the pleasure of hosting a conversation with our QMUL alumnus Gavin Lewis, Managing Director at BlackRock, business leader, and author of "The Opportunity Index".
We discussed his upbringing, his experiences at QMUL and subsequent career journey, the obstacles faced by underrepresented professionals and his advocacy for greater diversity & inclusion in the financial sector.
Reflecting on his book, and our conversation, here are some of my take-aways:
👉 Aspiration: In hearing Gavin’s experiences of violence, racism, and financial strain while growing up in the inner city, it is tempting to explain his unlikely journey to the heights of the financial industry by focusing on his personal resolve, intelligence, resourcefulness. Yes, he has those qualities in spades. But his story also shows that when most experiences in your upbringing work toward limiting your horizons, those who can broaden your horizons matter hugely: a mother who refuses to lower her expectations for your academic achievement, a teacher who expects you to have something meaningful to say in class because he sees your potential. Environment nurtures aspiration.
👉 Leadership: Leadership journeys are demanding, and nobody travels this road alone. Be deliberate about building your support system: who are your developers, coaches, mentors, sponsors? How are you safeguarding your wellbeing while progressing professionally? The extra emotional labour that goes into being one of the few Black or minority ethnic leaders in your industry (e.g. constantly navigating biases, building your personal brand mindful of those) makes such support systems even more necessary.
👉 Inequality: Addressing economic disparities is just as important as tackling the social and cultural aspects of inequality. We should all own the solution when it comes to addressing racial inequities – don’t expect minority individuals to do all the work. Examine your own practices and beliefs: what part can you play in fostering workplace cultures where everyone can flourish? How can you seed aspiration and open professional opportunities for those whose life circumstances don’t easily provide them?
Thanks, Gavin, for being so authentic and generous in sharing your story. And hats off to QM Alumni for organising a great event!

A great evening at Queen Mary University of London as we welcomed back alumnus Gavin Lewis as the guest speaker for our latest Alumni Angles event.

I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY THE INFANT DEMOCRATIC-CAPITALISTIC MINDS OF TODAY BLAME USA GOVERNMENT. THEN IS ANY GOVERNMENT TO BE BLAMED FOR HOMELESS PROBLEMS PLAGUING THE WORLD.? NO. GOD KNOWS HEADACHES USA GOVERNMENT HAVE WITH THE FOREIGN AFFAIRS. THE NEW WORLD PRACTICALLY SHOCK TO WITNESS. PEOPLE ONLY WORKING TOGETHER FOR A COMMON GOAL.
"IN THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS." THUS DOESN'T THAT ALSO INCLUDE THE HOMELESS.
THE HOMELESS ARE OUT THERE.
ARE YOU.?
HOMELESS.. AN OPPORTUNITY MISUNDERSTOOD.
The modern economic system is a market economy, which is a capitalist economy where people, not the government--NOT THE GOVERNMENT--own most businesses. In a capitalist economy, prices allocate capital and labor between competing uses, and capital assets like factories, mines, and railroads can be privately owned and controlled.

EXAMPLE, IF YOU NEED TO RAISE MONEY FOR ANY REASON OR MORE SO LETS SAY THE "HOMELESS" PROBLEM WHICH IS BELIEVED TO BE TIME & MONEY CONSUMING BUT IN ONE DIRECTION TOWARD THE HOMELESS.
HOWEVER CRYPTOCURRENCY CAN POSSIBLE ALLOWS AN EXPENDITURE OF CURRENCY TO BENEFIT ALL WHO USES THE CRYPTO & REGARDLESS OF HOW IT'S CONSUMED.

As a coach and a teacher, I love honoring athletes and students. In honoring Greg Boyle, I was reminded that getting awards "right" buoys our spirits; it's strengthens our society. It is good to collectively celebrate and honor a person. However, I have certainly gotten it wrong, too. Here are a few points of consideration for why it's worth doing what you can to get it right. #clutch#HomeboyIndustrieshttps://lnkd.in/gQgtzkEX

Did you notice if you have taken time to see “𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏” series how the Queen Elizabeth when she was much younger was not permitted to attend regular school with the other children her age?
Hers was a different type of schooling required simply because it was a known fact she was heir to the throne and so the education she required was that befitting of one who would one day rule? She needed to be moulded. To “Become”
There is a different kind of education required in order for you to be moulded into “𝑾𝒉𝒐” you are meant to be. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍.
There is great gain in investing time in personal growth and education that aligns with your unique path. Traditional schooling may not always provide the specific knowledge or skills needed for your individual success.
So instead, seek out opportunities for self-directed learning, mentorship, and personal experiences that resonate with your goals and aspirations, they can be incredibly beneficial.
What person are you meant to be, what calling is on your life for who you’re meant to be and what education do you require in order to make you “become?”
