In the quest for educational equity and inclusion, partnerships between educational institutions, nonprofits, and communities are lighting the way forward. These collaborations are a testament to what can be achieved when diverse groups come together with a common goal: to ensure that every student has access to a quality education, irrespective of their background. From joint research initiatives to community-based education programs, these partnerships are breaking down barriers and creating more inclusive learning environments. They're not just changing policies; they're transforming lives by making education more accessible, culturally responsive, and equitable for all. I am working hard to better connect the dots in communities in Ohio utilizing the Collective Impact model. We have found that there are two roadblocks that prevent communities from executing this model. 1. Funding 2. Establishing a successful backbone At Ohio Daily Digital, we are creating success by removing those two major obstacles. You can learn more about the Collective Impact model by reading the original research paper from Stanford below. https://lnkd.in/gRrbvp9u

The Youth Summits are a new Academy initiative where we partner with Youth Boards across locations to explore youth-driven, collective leadership and to co-create new learning ecosystems. Three weekends ago we gathered with our friends in Washington, DC, for the DC Youth Voices Summit, a three-day learning experience designed by young people and led by young people. The DC Youth Board crafted a learning space based on collective reflection, artistic expression, and friendship. Together, we investigated how creative and reflective practices prompt transformational learning for young people, and we uncovered three ways adults and young people can support youth-led learning. 1) Adults can support youth-led learning by contributing time, energy, and resources to youth-led learning spaces. 2) Young people can begin to imagine youth-led spaces by reflecting on what inspires them and what they care about. Then, they can think about how they would like to share their inspiration and care with others. 3) Together, young people can reflect on the question: What do you and your peers want to co-create for your community? Do you have ideas about how to support young people in leading their own learning? Tell us in the comments! If you are a young person or know a young person who would like to join an Academy Youth Board, visit https://lnkd.in/g4r-X577.

Expanding community impact as an educational institution is a #transformative endeavor. For many schools, community impact is a key element to its mission, vision and values. At the The Mount Vernon School, our strategic plan sets out the make students 'Impact Ready.' When educational institutions focus on scaling their community impact, they proactively address the unique needs and concerns of the communities they serve. Not only does this develop responsive and socially responsible students, it aims to IMPACT the world. So, how does The Mount Vernon School do it? A scaling process allows us to meticulously track and assess the outcomes of their initiatives. By doing so, we not only demonstrate our effectiveness but we also showcase our dedication to program enhancement, in line with the project's emphasis on continuous improvement. Scaling community impact as an educational institution embodies a win-win philosophy, fostering collaboration and mutual growth. Your school can do this, too and we can help! https://lnkd.in/ei6WFCHf

This week I am attending the International Association of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement in New Orleans, at Tulane University. Thanks to all the organizers for bringing us together in person. I am so excited to hear about all the great work my international colleagues are doing and to present on our office's Community-University Engagement Support (CUES) and Partnership Recognition and Exploration (PRE) funds tomorrow morning. As I finish up each day, I will share a handful of takeaways that I hear from presenters and keynotes to spread the word beyond the walls of our beautiful conference setting at Tulane! #iarscle2023 Day 1 Takeaways: Elevating new approaches to community engagement must be a transformative journey, one that continually honours and recognizes community for their expertise and role in catalyzing change. As faculty and administrators at institutions of higher education, we need to earnestly and intentionally listen to community partners, and not simply feel satisfied by creating a space for talk to happen. "Proximity without presence should not happen"--faculty, students, and staff from academic institutions need to be deeply present in all aspects of the process to build trusting relationships. Acts of responsive listening and demonstrated cultural understanding are keys to showing that we want to build relationships with intention. It is vital that we seek out the fault lines in our approaches to engagement and collaboration and co-construct ways to resolve them. Community-driven and culturally-responsive community engagement is the key to achieving strategies and actions at institutes of higher ed to be diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible institutions; this means acknowledging and challenging assumptions, both personal and institutional, and meeting these with reflexivity and shared purpose. The Carnegie Foundation and its international partners, including the IARSLCE Alliance and Engagement Australia, are bringing a research strategy to life that will open access to years and years of data collected through the Elective Community Engagement Classification. Lots more to come, so stay tuned for ways to engage in this work!
