HEET (Home Energy Efficiency Team) is working with gas utility companies like Eversource Energy to repurpose existing infrastructure in the effort to achieve net-zero emissions in Massachusetts by 2050. “By [working at] a utility scale, we can cover the costs of the transition to this safer form of heating and cooling without leaving anyone behind” says Zeyneb Magavi, HEET co-director. New York utilities plan 13 projects to replace gas pipelines with underground heat-sharing systems to lower the cost for buildings to switch to emissions-free heat pumps. It's a big push on thermal energy networks, and one that could be a model for other states working on the concept as a chief way to decarbonize gas utilities without undermining their business model and leaving their workers and customers out in the cold: https://lnkd.in/e_MQ5DK4

The State of New York has a new decarbonization strategy with 13 pilot projects submitted by utilities to replace fossil-gas pipelines with infrastructure for clean, carbon-free heat pumps. The goal is to eliminate fossil fuels and carbon emissions from the gas utility business by utilizing heat pumps, which are significantly more energy-efficient compared to fossil-fired furnaces or boilers. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that ground-source heat pumps reduce energy consumption and emissions by up to 44 percent compared to air-source heat pumps and 72 percent compared to standard air-conditioning equipment. This is an exciting push towards widespread clean energy usage! Read more from Canary Media Inc. here: https://lnkd.in/g9G5Q5vi #clean #energy #newyork #development

Natural Gas Utilities: you’re not in the natural gas business, you’re in the energy infrastructure business. Super interesting pilots happening in NY that are unlocking opportunities to move heat (instead of natural gas) around densely populated areas, particularly mixed use development (yet another argument in favor of this, BTW). The projects are obvious even today, but regulations are a barrier. Utiliities should be able to see from a simple SWOT analysis that they are in the perfect position to own this space. Instead of engaging in a pointless fight to convince the world to delay the phase out of natural gas and eventually replace it with hydrogen, they should be leaning into it. https://lnkd.in/giy4R3HD

Fascinating concept of a potential business evolution for natural gas utilities being explored in earnest in New York State. Use the expertise and assets of a utility that’s built underground, piped distribution systems to introduce (more) thermal energy networks. These thermal energy networks would enable heat pump technology in both heating (low-temp capabilities) and cooling (ultra-high efficiency) mode. We continue to see growth in geothermal system demand from our more rural clients to capture these benefits independently (+ Inflation Reduction Tax Benefits), but utility-scale developments would enable the same upside in dense urban areas. I could see this business model being particularly popular with dual-fuel utilities who can win on both sides of the coin. I am always impressed (and appreciative) when the academic and industrial worlds converge; it brings together creativity and practicality. Coming from the oil & gas industry, I have always felt limited by the mantra applied by most clients: I do not want to be the first one to test an innovative solution. I cannot deny that I understood the concept, especially when important sums of money are involved; however, there has always been the inclination to look at innovation as a potential way forward to obtain better results. I can say that the Energy Transition is forcing the hands in this respect! #energytransition #renewableenergy #innovation #marineengineering #academicexcellence
